Continue ReadingSGs were impressive on Saturday, as players did a plethora of different things that impressed myself and other scouts. Some showed off their defensive prowess on the wings, others their shooting abilities. Some even impressed as rebounding gurus. In this piece, I highlight the 7 top performers at the SG position
Blake Michael (2021) Fremont St.Joseph 6’3- Arguably one of the best players I saw on the day, Michael is a tough nosed player that really impressed me with his size and willingness to defend. Got involved on the glass even though he was on the perimeter and picked up some rebounding and second chance opportunities for himself. Willing to defend bigger wings or SFs and did it well.
Tasos Cook Tasos Cook 6'2" | SG Westerville Central | 2021 State OH (2021) Westerville Central 6’2- One of the more explosive players you’ll find on this list. Elite playmaker for himself and others. Creates opportunities with his court awareness and athleticism. Extremely difficult to defend once he gets downhill as his frame is much stronger since seeing him in person in 2019. Another guard that can get out in transition and likes to play up-tempo.
Omari Effiong Omari Effiong 6'2" | SG Thomas Worthington | 2021 State OH (2021) Thomas Worthington 6’2- One of my favorite defenders on the day, Effiong has a great vertical leap and uses it frequently. Elevates and uses his long arms to contest shots at the rim whether it be a guard or wing attacking. Solid offensive player himself with a good midrange shooting touch that was on display.
William Hagwood (2021) Willoughby South 5’11- Quick 2G that impressed as a solid defensive perimeter player. Utilizes his quick feet and athleticism to successfully defend. Advances the ball in transition and likes to get out on the fast break where he can use that speed. Solid shooting touch and can get going from almost anywhere on the perimeter.
Jalen Wenger Jalen Wenger 6'4" | SF Dalton | 2022 State OH (2022) Dalton 6’4- I was really impressed with Wenger’s size for a Guard. Handles the ball well against pressure and seemed to excel in slashing off the perimeter. Uses a strong frame to create mismatches on the wing and powered through defenders in the paint. If he can find a consistent jump shot to fall, Wenger is going to be a target for some high end D2, LM programs.
Zion Reynolds Zion Reynolds 6'4" | SF Western Hills | 2021 State OH (2021) Western Hills 6’4- Reynolds has always been one of the bigger guards I watch during showcases/games and he utilized that size on Saturday. One of the best rebounders you will find at the SG position, Reynolds elevates and hustles which makes him impressive to watch. Goes after every 50/50 ball and honestly wins almost every time due to his athleticism and heart. Under the radar guard that should be on NAIA/D3 radars.
Tyler Ganley Tyler Ganley 6'2" | CG Brecksville-Broadview Heights | 2022 State OH (2022) Brecksville-Broadview Heights 6’3- This was my first time seeing Ganley live and he impressed with his offensive game. Has the green light to shoot the ball and showed consistency hitting from the 3PT line and midrange levels. Creates his own scoring opportunities with his quick and high release, solid footwork, and smart decision making.
