Many of these players are names you’ve heard before and they are much deserving as they’ve earned respect with their style of play, athleticism, scoring capabilities, and distribution skillset. Here are my top 6 from Saturday.
JJ Simmons JJ Simmons 5'10" | PG Beechcroft | 2022 State OH (2022) Beechcroft 6’0- Simmons is a lethal shooter and demands defensive respect on the perimeter. Has the green light to shoot from anywhere on the wing. Creates opportunities for himself with the dribble setup and off-ball movement. Could transition into a SG at the collegiate level.
Luke Denbow Luke Denbow 6'0" | PG Ashland | 2022 State OH (2022) Ashland 6’1- Denbow is incredibly fast with the ball in his hands and truly one of the best under-the-radar PGs in the 2022 class. Sets up teammates with good confident passing. Quick decision maker capable of punishing with his blow by speed and finishing capabilities.
Lawrent Rice Lawrent Rice 6'4" | PG Huber Heights Wayne | 2023 State #184 Nation OH (2023) Wayne 6’3- Rice continues to explode on the scene and show why he is the state’s 2nd best prospect overall. Used his 6’3 frame and athleticism to completely overpower opposing guards on Saturday. Bouncy and athletic with the ball in his hands, Rice can score in a multitude of ways. Impressed further with his ability to defend the perimeter.
Ryan Chew Ryan Chew 5'11" | PG Bellbrook | 2022 State OH (2022) Alter 5’10- Lightning fast in transition and one of the best passers you will find, Chew has incredible vision and had on full display. Moves the basketball and facilitates while being a scoring threat as well. Quick release on his jump shot and a very impressive pull-up jumper.
Terrance Pankey Jr Terrance Pankey Jr 6'0" | PG Ursuline | 2023 State OH (2023) Ursuline 6’2- Pankey is one of two 2023 prospects on this list. Gifted scorer on the offensive end, Pankey has a nice overall arsenal which includes using his 6’1 frame on the interior while also setting teammates up with his distributing capabilities. What I really like about Pankey however is his defensive awareness and presence. Communicates on the defensive end and shifts around on help side.
Mekhi Elmore Mekhi Elmore 6'1" | PG Thurgood Marshallchooligh | 2022 State OH (2022) Dunbar 6’1- Known in the past for his ability to score beyond the arc, Elmore showed a different style of play on Saturday. Attacked still off the perimeter but did a solid job of setting guys up and advancing the ball in transition. Good midrange shooter that can knock down shots off the drive and with heavy defensive pressure.
