Last season a lot of these players made impacts at the varsity level and many more made a huge impact at the lower level. When it comes to evaluating players this young we try and look at what players will turn into and where they will end up and not necessarily where they are at. In the past we have seen players go from 6’2 as freshman to 6’9 entering their senior year. We have also seen players go from unranked to solid college prospects. We look forward to seeing growth in this class.
A very notable prospect in the class is Quentin Meza Quentin Meza 6'0" | PG Cyprus | 2023 State UT of Cyprus High School who is sneaky good. The reason we say sneaky is because he is stronger and faster in live action play than you think. He has a quick release and he is a student of the game that makes some impressive offensive reads. “Q” is one of the top scorers in the state as he had an impressive freshman campaign that help make his team a force for years to come.
Now we make our way all the way to Southern Utah to take a look at 6’9 Lyman Simmons Lyman Simmons 6'10" | PF RSL Academy | 2023 State UT of Snow Canyon who had some exponential growth this Spring and Summer as he has developed a shot from 15-feet that is almost automatic. He has added some speed to his game as he is learning how to run the floor. Lyman is still growing into his body and at times you have to take a step back and realize that Lyman was just a freshman. Lyman was able to play up on the 16’s with Utah Prospects and it was a learning experience that has made the transition back to high school easier as his development is very noticeable. Lyman is a HM player that will have plenty of offers under his belt in due time.
Over at Pleasant Grove there are two players that have been excellent and they happen to be part of that 2023 class so the backcourt fo the Vikings will be impressive for some time. 6’0 PG Jordan Ross Jordan Ross 6'3" | PG Link Academy | 2023 #132 Nation MO has been putting in that work as he plays with such control and makes it look effortless. Jordan can really shoot the ball from deep and snake his way through defenders and get through the lane. Jordan has a few Division 1 offers as his potential has been noted by local programs as well as those in surrounding states.
Staying at PG we have one of the toughest kids in the class is 6’2 Michael Mitton who plays that CG position as he can move from position to position. Michael can break defenders down and finish through contact. He also moves well without the basketball, he has great vision and has a good handle.
Another player to keep an eye on is 6’2 G Mason Bendinger of Woods Cross who really put his name on the map playing in some local showcase games where he was putting up some impressive numbers against some upper-classmen. It wasn’t the points that turned heads, it was the way he was scoring as he was able to score at all three levels and play with a consistent motor. Look for Mason to really help a rebuilding team in WX stay in games.
