I wanted to give a rundown of players from the state of Iowa that got to play this summer and showed well. Here is the post players from class 1A-3A that stood out to me.
Daniel Tobiloba Daniel Tobiloba 7'0" | C Grand View Christian | 2023 State IA , 2023 – 7’0 C – All Iowa Attack 16U & Grandview Christian High School (1A)
Daniel Tobiloba Daniel Tobiloba 7'0" | C Grand View Christian | 2023 State IA may be the best kept secret in the class of 2023, maybe in the nation. Tobiloba is ultra agile, and has a long wingspan that blocks a lot of shots. Tobiloba has a raw but developing low post game but with more experience and strength he should be able to continue to grow those moves. Tobiloba is a player at this level where coaches can pressure the ball with other players and stick him in the middle of the lane to block anything that comes in the lane. He is able to finish around the rim through defenders or on defenders with dunks that will bring some energy to the gym. He finds good positions to get rebounds that he can get easy put backs. With more maturation within his game, Daniel will continue to open eyes everywhere.
Jaylon Moses Jaylon Moses 6'8" | PF Xavier | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 6’8 PF – Martin Brothers 17U & Cedar Rapids Xavier High School (3A)
Moses is a talented, do-it-all type player that is very comfortable shooting it from the 3 point line. Moses is a lanky defender who will need to improve his side-to-side defending, but his shot blocking ability and way he can make it tough on opponents is what stands out defensively. As I said, Jaylon can stretch the defense and showed this summer he can do it efficiently. The untapped potential of Moses is what is intriguing, as he’s been plagued by injuries most of his HS career. He gets good positioning on rebounds and will only continue to become a better rebounder when he fills out his frame more. Moses has good footwork and patience in the post and uses ball fakes and pivots to get in a good position to score the ball. Moses picked up an offer from DI Farleigh-Dickinson this summer with his play, and will look to carry that momentum into the winter season.
Trey Kriener, 2022 – 6’7 PF/C – Iowa Barnstormers Gold 16U & Sout Winneskiek High School (1A)
Trey Kriener played his first ful AAU season this summer, and played it on a talented Iowa Barnstormers team. Kriener has nice footwork at 6’7 and is nimble. A play that caught my eye when I was watching Trey was the way he was switched onto a guard on a ball screen scenario and he moved his feet very well to stay in front of the offensive player which resulted in him moving the ball along to a teammate. That is something that will translate no matter where you’re playing as a big man. With a 6’7 frame Trey can effect the game in many ways as a defender, rebounder, shot blocker, and even getting into passing lanes. When he fills it out more Kriener will be one to watch out for.
Creighton Morisch, 2021 – 6’7 PF – Martin Brothers 17U & Spirit Lake High School (3A)
Creighton Morisch is what I would call an efficient big man. In his high school season he gets more on the perimeter and shows the capability to shoot the 3 point shot at a high rate, eclipsing the 40% mark this past winter. With Martin Brothers he was used more as a traditional post player down in the low block. Morisch is good off the bounce with straight line drives and can finish around the hoop with either hand. At 6’7 he can come off screens for a shot or look to get the ball to a teammate. Creighton received his lone offer from NAIA Dordt University this summer coming off of his performances with Martin Brothers and he will look to expand that going into the winter season with Spirit Lake.
Kale Krogh Kale Krogh 6'6" | C Ballard | 2022 State IA , 2022 – 6’6 C – All Iowa Attack 16U & Ballard High School (3A)
Krogh is another good football prospect in the state of Iowa who also doubles up as a good basketball prospect. As you can imagine Krogh is a big bodied, strong presence inside the paint for both Ballard and the All Iowa Attack. He has good touch around the rim and will follow up missed shots with authority if given the chance. Krogh is a hard worker on both ends of the floor and will run in transition to give his teammates an option. As you can imagine with the length, strength, and frame of Krogh, he is also a strong rebounder who crashes the boards very well on both ends. Though Kale will probably end up on a football field on Saturdays, he holds a nice skillset on the basketball court as well who will help his team try to get to the Well again this winter.
Marvion Jackson Marvion Jackson 6'5" | PF West Burlington | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 6’5 PF/C – Iowa Barnstormers Black 17U & West Burlington High School (2A)
A lot of eyes were on the Iowa Barnstormers 17U Gold team, but the black team also has some talented players as well. Marvion Jackson Marvion Jackson 6'5" | PF West Burlington | 2021 State IA stood out to me when watching this team as he does a little bit of everything on the court. He can step out and hit a 3 point shot off the catch, but can also score inside efficiently as well. Jackson is good about going straight up on the defensive end and playing the ball in the air to get blocks on the opposing teams. Jackson reads the offense well and gets into passing lanes for steals and he averaged almost 2 steals per game this past winter. Marvion could be an under-the-radar candidate that could take a step up this year.
