I wanted to give a rundown of players from the state of Iowa that got to play this summer and showed well. Here is the class 1A-3A point guards that stood out to me.
Blaise Porter Blaise Porter 6'1" | PG New London | 2023 State #298 Nation IA , 2023 – 6’0 PG – Iowa Barnstormers Gold 15U & New London High School (1A)
I’ve written about Blaise Porter Blaise Porter 6'1" | PG New London | 2023 State #298 Nation IA quite a few times this summer I feel, but all of it is definitely warranted. Porter showed us this summer why he’s one of the best, if not the best, class of 2023 prospect. Porter’s last tournament in Omaha he showed off an attribute I hadn’t seen quite yet from him, his athleticism. He took a pass down the lane and exploded towards the hoop for an emphatic dunk. Blaise is someone who makes the team better and can do it in every way. He’s a good passer, patient with the ball, can shoot it out to the 3 point line, and can take it to the rack. He will see plenty of the ball this winter with New London, and will look to expand on his lone DI offer from Bryant.
Karter Petzenhauser Karter Petzenhauser 6'4" | SG Spencer | 2022 State IA , 2022 – 6’2 PG – Martin Brothers 16U & Spencer High School (3A)
Petzenhauser is a good lead guard for Martin Brothers. He can shoot it from the outside, but is really a pass first PG who controls the offense and gets his teammates into winning positions. Karter is good at taking care of the ball and doesn’t turn the ball over. Petzenhauser is good off the dribble and can drive and dish to his teammates and displayed that for Martin Brothers this summer. Bottom line is he’s a PG you want on your team because he makes the team better. He will lead his Spencer High School team into the winter season and should garner more interest with a good season.
Cooper DeJean Cooper DeJean 6'2" | CG OABCIG | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 6’2 PG – Martin Brothers 17U & OABCIG High School (2A)
Cooper DeJean Cooper DeJean 6'2" | CG OABCIG | 2021 State IA is a really good football player, as he will be heading off to the University of Iowa to play defensive back for the Hawkeyes next year, but DeJean is no slouch on the hardwood either. He uses elite athletic ability to get to the hoop and get to the spots he likes to facilitate for his team. On the fast break, defenses need to know where DeJean is at because he will throw down a highlight dunk if you don’t track him. He’s a hard nose defender as well where he uses his brute strength and athletic ability to guard the ball and block shots at the rim. Had Cooper pursued a basketball career he would definitely have found a good home for himself. OABCIG will be a contender to win a state title.
Trey Shearer Trey Shearer 5'10" | PG Montezuma | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 5’10 PG – Martin Brothers 17U & Montezuma High School (1A)
Trey Shearer Trey Shearer 5'10" | PG Montezuma | 2021 State IA is an intriguing prospect at the 1A level as the Truman State commit is a playmaker. The 11th highest point scorer per game in the state of Iowa is a do-it-all player for Montezuma. He fits in well with the Martin Brothers team because he’s a good shooter, and goes with the other ball handlers on the team. He’s a savvy CG type of player for his high school team and you can bring him off the ball and be effective or give him the ball and he will make a play for the team. Shearer will lead his Montezuma team looking to finish off the season with a championship.
Noah Miller Noah Miller 5'11" | CG Forest City | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 6’0 PG – Minnesota Lightning 17U & Forest City High School (2A)
The one thing that stands out about Noah Miller Noah Miller 5'11" | CG Forest City | 2021 State IA is his active hands on defense. For Forest City he averaged a touch under 3 steals per game, and for the Lightning he continues to effect the game on the defensive end. He’s an efficient shooter off the catch and shoots the 3 ball well coming off the screen on the dribble. As the point guard he is good at getting his team into spots to get the best outcome and has no problem throwing it around the arch or dishing off to a teammate for an open shot. On the break he likes to push the ball up with a pass ahead to get the offense started quickly or to get a shot at the rim. Miller has started to attract some DIII, NAIA schools and he will look to expand that list with the Indians this winter.
Austin Hilmer Austin Hilmer 5'10" | PG North Linn | 2022 State IA , 2022 – 5’11 PG – Iowa Barnstormers Gold 16U & North Linn High School (1A)
Some people may know the last name Hilmer from Austin’s older brother who is now at Upper Iowa playing basketball and baseball for the Peacocks. Austin will be no different when it comes to playing college ball at Upper Iowa as he committed last week to the Peacocks basketball staff. Hilmer is a scrappy PG, who could also play off the ball. He goes after every ball with relentless effort and is someone you want to have on your team as a coach. With the Lynx’s leading scorer gone from this past season, Hilmer will have more weight to score for his team. He averaged 17 PPG last season, so I would look for that to have an uptick going forward for the North Linn PG. Hilmer committed quite early in the process to Upper Iowa, but that just means he will be focusing on taking his team to the Well.
Dawson Forgy Dawson Forgy 5'11" | PG Winterset | 2022 State IA , 2022 – 5’11 PG – Martin Brothers 16U & Winterset High School (3A)
Forgy is best in transition where he has space to create or dish to teammates. Dawson is a good passer of the ball from the PG spot and averaged nearly 7 assists per game for Winterset last winter. Another attribute of Forgy’s game is that he can shoot it from the arch. He shot 43% from the 3 point line last season and will need to shoot it more with Easton Darling Easton Darling 6'0" | CG Winterset | 2020 State IA gone from the Huskies lineup. Dawson definitely has the tools to thrive in the offense and he showed that this summer with Martin Brothers. Forgy, also a talented RB on the gridiron, should get the keys to the Huskies offense this upcoming winter and will get to show what he can do as the main guy.
Jordan Lawrence Jordan Lawrence 5'9" | PG Camanche | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 5’10 PG – Iowa Mavs 17U & Camanche High School (2A)
Jordan Lawrence Jordan Lawrence 5'9" | PG Camanche | 2021 State IA is a little under the radar PG prospect in the state of Iowa and I can’t quite put my finger on why. He’s a bouncy 5’10 PG, who can really get up and use his athleticism offensively or defensively. Out in transition is where he is really dangerous in using that athleticism. He shoots a high percentage from the 3 point line off the catch or off of a ball screen shooting it at a 41.5% clip. Lawrence has offers to play football at NAIA Grand View, and being a multi-sport athlete seems to be a common theme in small town Iowa. Camanche loses some fire power from their team this past season and Lawrence will be looked upon to pick up some of the scoring and facilitating for the Indians.
Luke Rankin Luke Rankin 5'10" | PG Dallas Center-Grimes | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 5’10 PG – All Iowa Attack 17U & Dallas Center-Grimes High School (3A)
Classic lefty point guard, Luke Rankin Luke Rankin 5'10" | PG Dallas Center-Grimes | 2021 State IA can fill it up from the outside with a smooth jumpshot. He likes to go with his left hand when penetrating off the bounce and uses a spin move effectively to get towards the basket. The number that sticks out to me is his 6.5 assists per game that he provided for the Mustangs this past season. When he gets to the lane he likes to go up with that aforementioned strong left hand and finish the play off inside. He has a nice pull-up jumper to his game and uses it effectively out to about 15 feet and a little beyond. Rankin has picked up offers from Dordt College, and DII Upper Iowa this summer season and I’ll be looking to see how many more programs come in with an offer this upcoming winter for the senior-to-be.
Kieren Nichols Kieren Nichols 5'11" | PG Knoxville | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 6’0 PG – Kingdom Hoops 17U & Knoxville High School (3A)
Nichols is a good three level scorer for Kingdom Hoops and Knoxville. Out of all four classes this past season Nichols came in at #8 in scoring in the state of Iowa. That clip was 25.9 point per game, but that isn’t all he does as that goes along with 3 rebounds per game and 4.5 assists per game. Kieren is a do-it-all type player. He shoots the 3 point shot at an efficient rate of 35%, but is largely effective off the dribble. He has a nice, quick first step to get by the defender and loves to get downhill on the drive to finish at the rim. On the defensive end he is active in the passing lanes which helps his team get out in transition. He is a gamer, and he will be looking to add to his offer from NAIA Morningside College.
Noah Allen Noah Allen 5'11" | PG Pella | 2022 State IA , 2022 – 5’10 PG – Beyond Ball 16U & Pella High School (3A)
The first time I saw Noah Allen Noah Allen 5'11" | PG Pella | 2022 State IA playing I had turned on a game for Beyond Ball to watch another prospect on the team. As I was watching the game, the PG stood out to me and the way he could create off the dribble and finish at the rim even though he wasn’t the biggest guy on the court. My focus switched over to Allen for the remainder of the game and he really impressed me with the way he was able to score the basketball. I would definitely label him as a scoring PG for the Dutch and Beyond Ball. His dribble is handled well as he uses a plethora of combo moves to get defenders off balance. He also lead Newton last year in 3 point percentage at 36% from the 3 point line. Having moved to Pella in the off-season, Allen will join a team who lost contributions from quite a few seniors, and we will see how he can build on his summer season.
