With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top forwards in the small schools in Section 5
Davon Townley, Minneapolis North
The Polars are going to be ranked in the top three or four in Class AA to start the season and a big reason why is that they’ve got one of the best true bigs in the state in Townley. He’s a high-major football prospect, but he’s also an at-times dominant post who routinely delivers double-doubles. He’s relentless on the glass, has the quickness to beat guys from the mid and high posts and the mobility to guard inside and out.
Avery Liestman Avery Liestman 6'4" | SF Litchfield | 2021 State MN , Litchfield
Liestman is one of the best wings in the Wright County Conference and at 6-foot-3, he’s capable of guarding up or down an opposing lineup. He averaged better than 15 points per game as a junior and on a team that didn’t have a lot of great offensive options, he’s a guy that consistently gets it done on that end of the floor.
Sam Zilmer Sam Zilmer 6'4" | PF Rockford | 2022 State MN , Rockford
Zilmer saw sparing minutes off the bench for the Rockets last season but looks like a legitimate breakout candidate. He’s 6-foot-4 with the athleticism and length to excel on the wing. He’s a good shooter, a capable slasher and a heady decision-maker. And he’s capable of defending multiple positions. Don’t be surprised if he’s a big part of what makes Rockford strong this year.
Ryan Schwinghammer, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa
Schwinghammer was a key interior presence for BBE last season, averaging better than 10 points per game while supplying solid defense and rebounding. If the Jaguars are going to improve on their 14-win campaign from a season ago – and they have the pieces to do it – Schwinghammer emerging as an all-league player is required.
Lathaniel Kroschel, Hickley-Finlayson
Hinckley-Finlayson reached the section championship game last season before the postseason was canceled. A key component to that success was Kroschel, a 6-foot-3 swingman. Kroschel can shoot it from the perimeter, get out in transition and attack gaps and play through contact. And he gets it done on the defensive end of the floor too, as he’s capable of harassing smaller guards while also competing with opposing bigger wings.
