Last year’s senior class was filled with talented passers so many of them have graduated, but a number of young floor leaders are back to dish out dimes this season.
Here are the top returning assist men for 2020-21.
Leo Sewell Leo Sewell 5'9" | PG Wilson | 2022 State OR (2022 Wilson) – 5.9 apg – #1
The state’s leading assist man is back and he broke out in a huge way his sophomore season. The 5-foot-9 point guard pretty much had the ball in his hands on every Wilson possession this season and he was able to not only lead 6A in dimes per game but also put up some offensive numbers of his own. The Trojans will continue to depend on Sewell for a lot offensively but with shooters surrounding him, he has a great chance of defending his assists title.
Esyah Pippa-White Esyah Pippa-White 6'2" | PG Gresham | 2023 State OR (2023 Gresham) – 5.8 apg – #3
Pippa-White made an immediate impact as a freshman at Gresham and while he’s a natural scorer, he quickly realized the Gophers had plenty of scoring options alongside him. This helped lead him to focus on facilitating but at the same time, was still able to put up some points in double digits. Gresham does look to fill some holes on offense so he’ll be asked to score more, but Pippa-White is still the point guard and should challenge for the 6A title in 2020-21.
Roy Bunn Roy Bunn 5'9" | PG Jesuit | 2021 State OR (2021 Jesuit) – 4.1 apg – #11
Arguably the best pure point guard in the senior class, Bunn stepped into the point guard spot at Jesuit and shone. The 5-foot-10 floor leader is a magician with the ball and really excels in isolation situations where he can get past his defender, into the lane, and kick it out to Jesuit’s many talented perimeter shooters – most all of whom are back this season. Bunn has set a goal for himself to average double figures in assists and he could very well do that in Jesuit’s motion offense attack.
Lamar Washington Lamar Washington 6'4" | CG AZ Compass Prep | 2022 State #128 Nation AZ (2022 Jefferson) – 4.0 apg – #12
Washington started off high school as a wing but has been transitioning into a James Harden-like scoring point guard. The 6-foot-4 junior has good floor vision and as talented a scorer he is, is more than willing to give up the basketball to teammates for better opportunities. Washington will be depended upon for a lot more offensively this season but he’ll have the ball in his hands a lot so his assist numbers should still be high.
Darius Gakwasi Darius Gakwasi 6'5" | SG Central Catholic | 2021 State OR (2021 Central Catholic) – 4.0 apg – #13
Despite the fact he’s not a point guard by trade, Gakwasi is highly skilled with the basketball and a talented passer. The 6-foot-5 swingman is particularly effective in transition, getting rebounds pushing the ball up the floor and finding open teammates streaking to the basket. He will once again be counted upon for shooting and scoring his senior season and may find the ball out of his hands more with some talented underclassmen coming up at the point, but his assist numbers should still be solid.
