The cerebral 5-foot-10 point guard from Jesuit has usually spent his summer playing travel ball, showcasing his talents in front of college coaches against top competition all over the country. That ended up being limited to one tournament in Las Vegas in July, but that hasn’t stopped college programs from showing interest and staying in contact the past few months while he’s been focused on improving his game.
“This summer I have just been trying to perfect my craft,” Bunn said. “This whole Covid period I have been mostly working on shooting more consistently both off the dribble and catch shoot and coaches are loving the progress that they are seeing. This summer has also been a good time to spend time with family as I usually would spend March-July on the EYBL circuit, that didn’t happened so me and the fam just been relaxing and doing fun excursions.”
Bunn did get a chance to play in one tournament in Las Vegas with an Oregon Prospects team that also included other top players in the state including Dane Erikstrup Dane Erikstrup 6'10" | C Beaverton | 2021 State OR , Lamar Washington Lamar Washington 6'4" | CG AZ Compass Prep | 2022 State #128 Nation AZ , and Marquis Cook Marquis Cook 6'6" | SF AZ Compass Prep | 2023 State #6 Nation AZ . “The Showcase in Vegas went well,” Bunn said. “I felt that I competed well against some of the top guys in the country and I feel my game has made a huge jump since March, but that’s just credit to my trainers and coaches who have spend numerous hours with me during this time.”
In Vegas, Bunn showed the ability to really create in isolation situations, blow by defenders to get to the hoop and either finish or kick it out to guys from open opportunities. He’s a pure point guard and college programs have paid notice and been in touch.
“My recruitment has really made a jump as well,” Bunn said. “I am supposed to go visit Washington State in the next couple of months. I have been in consistent contact with Army West Point, Long Beach State, Idaho, Portland, Cal Baptist, Colorado State, Yale, Chaminade, and Biola.”
Bunn noted that he feels a number of programs are close to offering him a scholarship. He’s keeping all of his options open. As he continues to work out on his own, Bunn is looking forward to getting back to competitive action again with Jesuit when things start up in January. He’s keeping his goals simple for both himself and the team.
“My thoughts are to win league and leave on a good note,” Bunn said. “I want to continue to be a leader and individually I want to win POY and an average a double double with points and assist and I think I can get it.”
Bunn currently ranks as the #20 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
