There was a ton of competition and hard play. Kids were playing together and really listening to our coaches and making sure they made plays in front of the many media members in the gym.
Here is a look at Part 1 of the craftiest guards I saw.
Jaylen Bain | 6-0 | Ft. Lauderdale
Bain was electric at the expo and is one of the flashiest ballhandlers out there. The 2021 guard was draining 3’s left and right and his step back is a true asset from long range or inside the arc. On Thursday, Bain earned an offer from Division III Wisconsin Stevens-Point. He is a heads-up passer and always looking to make a play. Bain is a top option for Ft. Lauderdale this season and a very underrated lead guard.
Omar Brown | 6-0 | Eastside
Jumping out of the gym in the third game of the day for Brown, he surprised many players and coaches in attendance with a one-handed slam. Brown has a sound mix of foot speed and strength to his game and it was on display on Saturday. At Eastside, the 2021 guard is a fine pairing with fellow senior guard Jarveil Gainey Jarveil Gainey 6'3" | CG Eastside | 2021 State FL , who was one of the top standouts from the event. Expect Brown to continue to score in bunches this fall.
Jimmie Williams | 5-9 | Beaches Chapel
2022 guard Jimmie Williams is the lone junior on this list and quite frankly, he plays even older than that. He carries a chip on his shoulder for a smaller guard, but he doesn’t shy away from anyone. The Beaches Chapel guard is lightning quick and that furthers his value on defense as he is able to generate havoc and steals often. Offensively, he is a gifted finisher and a nice passer. Williams is going to be in for a really nice year.
Ismael Baqai Ismael Baqai 6'0" | PG Pines Charter | 2021 State FL | 6-1 | Pembroke Pines Charter
Perhaps one of the most unselfish players in attendance was Baqai. A seasoned and high vision pass-first point guard, he gets everyone involved with quick passes, down court feeds and old school basketball. He has been a mature leader for the last two years and is headed to an important senior campaign. The 2021 guard is a bright kid in the classroom and someone that instantly makes any team better with his decision making and ability to finish baskets when needed.
Quinnton Jackson Quinnton Jackson 5'9" | CG Paxon | 2021 State FL | 5-11 | Paxon
It was a successful day for Jackson at the expo as he was shooting it well. His skills as a ballhandler and creator are solid as can be. He is a quick-twitch guard who had plenty of bright moments at a state semifinalist Paxon last season. Expect Jackson to have a major role for a 2021 heavy guard group for the Eagles. I like his versatility as a lead guard and off-ball mover.
