Most major summer events closed last week, and Gaso’s Fall Classic opens the school ball preseason. Below is a list of hoopers whose performances at the classic are just a glimpse into what they may achieve when the official start of the season begins.
Channon Hall
Hall looks to reprise his starting position at Mansfield Summit once again as he continues to create offense at the lead guard spot. A creative handle and a quick first step open the court for the senior to dissect defenses with his passing. He shows a strong control of the game, not allowing backcourts to speed him up. Expect a big season from him in his senior year as he looks to be the engine of this squad.
Tre Johnson
The 2024 product looks like he’ll be a rotation to starter level player for Lake Highlands when the ball tips in November. At 6-3 with long arms, Johnson debuted as a two-way threat against two veteran lead backcourts. Defensively he’s disciplined, sliding his feet while having a nose for passing lanes. On offense, he connected on jumpers from all levels while getting to the hole.
Devyn Franklin
Franklin may well be a matchup nightmare when high school ball returns. Knocking on the door of 6-8 the rising junior carries wide shoulders and an above average athletic base. He’ll need to work on his ball skills, but with the range on his jumpshot and ability to move on the perimeter, he’ll make his mark on offense. That size helps on defense where he’ll be a switchable defender that can cover most high schools, 1-5 and 1-4 for Texas best teams.
Cason Wallace Cason Wallace 6'4" | CG Richardson | 2022 State #6 Nation TX
Wallace looks ready to continue his dominance from the summer well into fall. The opening play comprised a wrap around pocket pass out of a pick and roll that lead to a Wallace assist. The junior had no trouble getting to the rim and scoring against Waxahachie’s size. He’s mastering the modern point guard position, becoming an offensive engine that can post 20 and 7 on a nightly basis. What he brings to the defensive as a long guard with the toughness to meet others at the rim is hard to replicate.
JaMyron Ellison
The athletic rising sophomore produced on the summer circuit with his energy and athleticism, but at the GASO Fall Classic, it was his shooting that lead the way. Ellison creates jump shots in the mid range off pick and rolls. Whether playing on or off the ball he connected from three point range.
Alex Anamekwe Alex Anamekwe 6'6" | PF McKinney | 2022 State TX
A sturdy 6-5 forward with a game just as rugged as his frame. Anamekwe operates out of the dunker spot, using his athleticism to shoulder his way to the rim where he finishes with authority. When catching on the perimeter he can use his quickness to get to his spot and score easy buckets around the basket.
