McCray will look to use his abilities to lead the Bobcats into a great conference season before attempting to advance to the state tournament with the hopes of bringing a title home. Continue reading for a breakdown of McCray’s game from all angles ahead of the 2020-21 season.
Defense: McCray is a great defender for the Bobcats with lots of upside. He has long arms and strong hands that allow him to run through passing lanes or poke the ball away from offensive players that lack a tight grip on the ball. He consistently grabs steals and averages at least a handful per game. Mort has great athleticism that he uses to keep guards in front. He is a very tough-nosed defender that likes to lock up opposing players. Against bigs, McCray uses his length to block shots and his strength to push posts away from the block. He is just as comfortable guarding bigs as he is on the perimeter. Mort is a tremendous rebounder for his position and goes after every board.
Offense: Mort is a solid player on offense. Most of his offensive damage is done at the rim after he uses a shot fake to get defenders off balance. He is smooth and athletic in the lane and can finish with both hands over taller defenders. He also uses his strength and power to finish against bigger players or to draw contact that allows him to get the free throw line for easy points. McCray also has a solid mid-range jumper that he uses infrequently if he cannot drive all the way to the rim. He rarely shoots outside and prefers to play to his strengths. McCray is also a good passer and consistently makes the right pass at the right time.
Overall: Altogether, Mort is a really solid guard for the Bobcats. He is not the flashiest and most productive offensive player, but he plays to his strengths and gets others involved as often as he can. On defense, Mort is a very tough defender that can guard anyone on the floor with ease. His size, coachability, and athleticism give him a lot of potential.
