With a mix flashy play and skilled abilities, Dabell is a fun player to watch who is also a serious winner. Watch for Kaden to take his game to the next level in the upcoming season as he looks to lead Rigby back to the state tournament where they could definitely do some damage. Continue reading for a breakdown of Kaden Dabell’s game ahead of the 2020-21 season.
Defense: Dabell is a tough defender who likes to apply on-ball pressure. He is a high-energy guard who feeds off of trying to out-work opponents and he loves to do this by wreaking havoc on the opposing guards. He begins pressuring as soon as the other point guards cross half court and he routinely can grab a steal or two solely from playing on-ball defense. Against bigs in the post, Kaden fights, but sometimes bigs are able to get back around or have the ball thrown over the top against his smaller frame. Nevertheless, he continues to battle and is able to force offensive players into tough shots from the block. For his position, Kaden is an okay defender that occasionally grabs a rebound if it bounces his way. He relies on his bigs to secure rebounds before throwing him the outlet pass.
Offense: Kaden has a lot of great skills on offense which begins with his confident approach to the game. Dabell plays with an extra chip on his shoulder and loves to play with a little bit of flash and flair. He has tight handles that he uses to breakdown opposing defenders before stepping back for a three or blowing past them into a layup. Kaden has a great shot from outside that he likes to use when defenders have their hands down on a closeout. He has a quick release and can get hot in a hurry if he is accidentally left open. If not shooting the outside jumper, Dabell likes to get into the lane where he can either score tough baskets directly at the hoop, or he can drive and kick to open shooters on the perimeter. Dabell is an excellent passer to anyone who is open on the floor and he has excellent vision which allows him to make those passes.
Overall: Dabell is an excellent point guard that any coach would love to have on their team. He is a tenacious defender with a high motor and the desire to steal the ball. On offense, he plays hard, smart, and is an offensive threat from 3 and at the hoop. I would expect his role to increase this year with the departure of a couple of key seniors from last season.
