As a two sport athlete, Sowell will look to lead the Diamondbacks in the upcoming season to a run at the district tournament before a shot at making an appearance at the state tournament. Century will have a new-look roster this season and Jovan will look to be the leader of the group. Continue reading for a breakdown of Sowell’s game on both ends of the court.
Defense: Jovan is a solid defender that likes to work hard on his defensive assignment. He has great reactions and quickness and rarely lets an offensive player drive by him to the basket. He has strong hands and can strip the ball away from players that dribble loosely or try to drive without first securing the ball. Against bigs, Sowell can struggle due to his size, but still battles hard and is pesky to deal with in the post. He works hard to fight around and still competes no matter the size of the offensive player. Though not a great rebounder, Sowell secures a lot of loose balls and is willing to dive on the floor to secure an extra possession for his team.
Offense: Sowell has a solid looking jumper from outside and can easily knockdown a shot if left open. He thrives in the open court in transition when he can get out, sprint the lanes, and find an easy bucket at the rim. In the half court setting, he can drive by taller defenders easily before stopping and popping for a mid-range jumper, or driving all the way to the basket for an easy score. He likes to get physical in the paint where he can use his body to create open lanes. One of his greatest offensive strengths is his ability to squeeze through tight gaps before kicking the ball out to open shooters or cutters.
Overall: Jovan is a solid guard that has a lot of quality attributes. He is an athletic defender that plays hard every single possession without getting tired. He is a great stopper that finishes possessions. On offense, he has the ability to knockdown the open shot and can also score at all three levels. Altogether, he is a solid option that will lead Century next season.
