Continue ReadingJoseph Schulkins is a 5’11” point guard from the class of 2021. Last season, he led the Columbia Wildcats on their pursuit of a state tournament appearance after a great season of competition. Joseph is a great point guard that plays the game with some added flair while making sure to get all of his teammates involved. Continue reading for an in-depth breakdown of his skills on both sides of the floor.
Defense: Schulkins is a solid defender that can keep his man in front. He is a strong guard that can push bigs out of the post when he gets switched and is also quick enough to keep guards in front of him. He has quick hands that he uses to knock the ball away from opposing guards and reacts to their first steps accurately. Joseph does a great job of picking up the ball early in transition and uses his body to push guards away from the paint when they try to drive. Against bigs, Schulkins likes to get physical in the paint and uses his strength to push players away from the block, forcing them into tough shots. Schulkins likes to rebound when he knows he can grab a board and will do so when he sees the opportunity arise.
Offense: Joseph likes to play the offensive side of the game with a lot of heart and finesse. He has a killer set of crossovers that he uses to slice and dice the defense on his way to a bucket at all three levels. On the perimeter, his feet are always ready to catch and shoot while he also likes to shoot coming out of a crossover or off of an on-ball screen. He has a great mid-range jumper that he likes to use once he steps back from a crossover. In the paint, Joseph thrives as he seeks out contact and bullies his way into the middle where he finishes extremely well. An underrated part of Schulkins’ game is his vision. He is a willing passer who loves to watch for backdoor cuts which allow his teammates to get easy buckets.
Overall: Altogether, Joseph is a well-rounded point guard that any coach would love to have on the floor. He gets the job done on defense and thrives on offense. His build allows him to play physically and he does not back down from any type of contact. I would expect Joseph to increase his scoring load and assist numbers this season for the Wildcats. Schulkins would make an excellent point guard at the next level.
