Phippen is part of a great group of players at Hillcrest that will look to compete for a shot at the district title in the upcoming season. Once they compete for the district title, they will look to make a deep run at the state tournament and return the title to the east side of the state. Continue reading for a detailed breakdown of Phippen’s game ahead of the upcoming season.
Defense: Phippen is a great defender that loves to pressure opposing guards. He is a quick and has a tireless motor that allows him to push himself for an entire game. He loves to pick up the ball just past half court and has great lateral skills. Phippen is a big guard with strong hands that he uses to poke the ball away and create steal opportunities. Last season, he averaged at least a couple of steals per game and always forces the offensive players into making mistakes. Garrett is not afraid to switch onto a big in the post as he is a strong player that pushes them away from the block. He likes to 3/4 so that he can use his strength to aid his lack of height in the post. Phippen is a solid rebounder as a point guard and routinely snags a few boards per game.
Offense: Garrett is a really solid shooter. The lefty has a great looking jump shot that he can knockdown anytime he is allowed to have his feet set. He is strategic in his shot attempts and chooses to mainly take open shots to make him a more efficient scorer. If he does not shoot the shot from the perimeter, Phippen likes to drive to the basket where he finishes on the left side and through contact. He lives at the free throw line and scores a lot of points after drawing a foul. Phippen is a pass-first point guard with great court vision and a knack for controlling the tempo of the game. He senses when the Knights need to slow down and have a great possession, or speed up and continue to score at will.
Overall: Phippen is a great point guard for the Hillcrest Knights and I expect him to grow into a leadership role for the team in the upcoming season. He leads by showing his defensive toughness and energy and will continue to pester offensive players. When left open, Phippen is a threat from outside and a trusted ball-handler.
