Hosted by recruiting legend Dinos Trigonis, the 48 team showcase featured some of the top AAU programs on the West Coast. It also was home to several big time defensive players. In this article PH takes a look at some of the top defenders from the event.
Jace Aquinioc 5’6 PG West Coast Select 2024 – WCS ran a slick 2-1-2 press, Aquinioc was the head, and he used his freedom to harass ballhandlers. Showed good instincts and quick hands, deflecting balls and getting into passing lanes.
Brandon Hall 6’5 SG Team More 2021 (#60PHIL) – Team More played a pressure, in your face style of defense and Hall was the catalyst. Showed terrific footspeed and good lateral quickness.
Shane Nowell Shane Nowell 6'6" | SG Eastside Catholic | 2021 State #85 Nation WA 6’5 SF Seattle Rotary 2021 (#5PHW 2021) – Physical wing defender. Nowell has the footspeed to guard on ball, and the upper body strength to defend on the block, or while running through screens.
Drew Carter 6’3 SG Seattle Rotary 2021 (#5PHO 2021) – The university of Colorado is getting a terrific player. On a floor full of stars Carter’s on ball defense stood out. Pitbull style defender that was able to get under and turn opposing ballhandlers.
Angelo Kambala Angelo Kambala 5'10" | CG Liberty | 2023 State NV 5’11 PG Vegas Elite 2023 (#7PHN 2023) (featured image) – Kambala has lighting quick hands and feet. He showed the ability to just take the ball away anyone who dare challenge him with the dribble. He also showed a high IQ which allowed him to play passing lanes, and get tip backs and deflections.
Mekhi Morris 5’10 PG College Prep 2021 – Morris was not having it. If you challenged him off the bounce, the pitbull on ball defender always seemed to be one step ahead. Low center of gravity and terrific lateral quickness made Morris a pest all weekend.
Kaden Perry Kaden Perry 6'10" | C Battle Ground | 2021 State #16 Nation WA 6’9 PF Seattle Rotary 2021 (#4PHW 2021) – As if it wasn’t hard enough to get by the guards of SR, you had to figure out how to get a shot up and over Perry as well. Spent most of the weekend playing Volleyball with opponents shot attempts.
Keba Keita 6’8 PF Empire 2022 (#3PHU 2022) – Keba actively seeked out balls to pin against the backboard. He has a terrific second jump which allowed him to alter several shots mere mortals would be unable to get to.
