One of those events, the Pangos All West Frosh/Soph Camp was held this weekend in Utah. The camp featured some of the top talent in the classes of 2023 and 2024 on the West Coast.
Here’s a look at some of the local Southern California players who participated in the camp.
1. Elijah Nelson Elijah Nelson 6'2" | SG Lakewood | 2023 State CA-S – Fountain Valley 2023
Nelson is a very intriguing player with a lot of potential. He’s got good size for a guard and he’s very athletic. He can finish strong at the rim and he has a lot of bounce in his jump. Solid ball-handler who can attack the rim. He’s also a very good defensive player on the wing and that’s an area where he can really make a strong impact.
2. Shane Bodden – Providence 2023
Bodden is an incoming transfer from Oak Park. He has a very solid three-point shot. He’s a great set shooter who moves well without the ball and gets himself free on the arc. Squares up well with the basket and has good shooting mechanics. He has the tools to be a good defender on the wing and could be in the mold of a 3&D type player.
3. Jack Turner – Santa Margarita 2024
Turner has a lot of bounce in his step. He’s a quick player, especially in transition. Can pull-up from three-point range on the break, and has a solid pull-up jumper off the dribble when he’s attacking in the half court. Nice little step back jumper too. Can shoot from distance. Defenses have to respect his jumper and he’s able to get to the rim.
4. A.J. Johnson – Taft 2023
Johnson has all the makings to be an explosive wing player. He’s long and quick and has a very good off the dribble game. Very comfortable with the ball in his hands and attacking whether it’s creating for himself or drawing the defense and finding open teammates. He is a blur in transition and has a solid crossover. Can get to the rim with ease.
