One of those events, the Pangos All West Frosh/Soph Camp was held this weekend in Utah. The camp featured some of the top talent in the classes of 2023 and 2024 on the West Coast.
Here’s a look at some of the local Southern California players who participated in the camp.
1. Seven Bahati – Los Altos 2024
Bahati has very good court vision and awareness, he looks for his teammates. He;s a crafty ballhandler who can create off the dribble; shakes defenders in half court or in transition. A long armed defender who contests well and can block shots. Hard to guard in transition; can go coast to coast and finish at the rim or will find the open teammate. Athletic finisher around the rim.
2. Will Smith III – Bishop Montgomery 2023
Smith is solid in transition; he’s athletic and can get out on the fast break. Can finish himself, but he looks for his teammates who are running with him. He will make the right play in transition. Strong around the rim and in the paint; will finish over smaller defenders. Fights hard on the glass for offensive rebounds. Decent defensive player who can stick with wings going to the rim and contest shots well.
3. Jaden Depina – Heritage Christian 2024
Depina is a crafty scorer who can take defenders off the dribble and get all the way to the rim. On the break, he looks for his teammates and looks to make the right pass. His strength is in attacking the rim. Although he can shoot from the outside, he’s best when he’s attacking the defense and getting into the lane. He has a nice little Euro-step. Good body control to absorb contact from defenders and still finish the play. Strong finisher in the paint.
4. James Evans – West Ranch 2024
Evans looks like a player who might be able to play multiple positions at the high school level. I’ve seen him able to play the post, but his skill-set is a little more versatile than that. He can play on the wing a bit and he has good size if he ever does play as a wing full-time. He runs the floor well in transition and he can finish strong on the break.
