With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top guards in Region 3
Lucas Schumacher Lucas Schumacher 6'2" | SG Linton | 2021 State ND , Linton/HMB
Schumacher might be the most influential player in the region, as he’s got the ability to control the game as much as any player in Class B. The 6-foot-2 senior averaged 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists last year and he’ll have the ball in his hands enough to put up even bigger numbers as a senior.
Steele Hansen Steele Hansen 5'10" | SF Oakes | 2021 State ND , Oakes
Oakes might be the favorite in Region 3 this year and Hansen forms one half of the region’s best duo. Hansen averaged a double-double last year, putting up 19 points and better than 10 rebounds while shooting nearly 60 percent from the field. He’s a strong, physical guard who can get to the rim and make plays, plus gets it done on the defensive end of the floor.
Adam Nitschke, Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier
Nitschke was a key piece for EKM last year, showing the ability to impact the game in a number of ways. He’ll have a big opportunity in the backcourt this year as the Rebels graduated a big chunk of their perimeter core. He’s got good size, he’s athletic and skilled. He’s going to be one of the key shot-creators for an EKM team that’ll be gunning for a second-straight region championship.
Garret Meehl Garret Meehl 5'11" | PG Oakes | 2021 State ND , Oakes
Meehl stuffed the stat sheet for the Tornadoes last year, averaging 17 points, more than six rebounds and nearly five assists. He’s a solid perimeter shooter and an excellent playmaker, and like Hansen, sets the tone on the defensive end of the floor.
Jayden Rath, Kidder County
Rath averaged nearly 14 points and five rebounds for a solid Kidder County squad a year ago and with the Wolves losing several of their other top players, he’ll be looked upon to lead the way. He’s not the biggest guy, but he’s athletic, quick and can score from just about anywhere on the floor. And he’s a tough defender at the point of attack.
Jake Wagner, Strasburg/Zeeland
Strasburg/Zeeland is another team that should contend in Region 3 and Wagner will be the team’s go-to guy. The 6-foot-2 swingman is a consistent offensive performer, possessing the scoring ability from all three levels. He’s excellent playing through contact and getting to the rim. He was an all-region player a year ago and gives the Clippers a legitimate go-to guy.
