With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top guards in Region 1
Jase Crockett Jase Crockett 5'10" | PG Northern Cass | 2021 State ND , Northern Cass
Crockett is a potential all-state lead guard and among the best point guards in Class B. The 5-foot-10 senior is dynamic on both sides of the court, possessing top-notch scoring ability from all three levels, plus a defensive tenacity that sets the tone for the rest of the team.
Max Kobbervig Max Kobbervig 5'10" | PG Central Cass | 2021 State ND , Central Cass
Kobbervig is one of the best shooters in the region and a steadying hand with the ball. With the Squirrels losing three other starters, he’ll have an opportunity to take on a much larger workload when it comes to handling the ball and making plays.
Dawson Lemna, Enderlin
Enderlin’s strength is on the interior but Lemna emerged a solid point guard last year, averaging better than nine points and three assists. He is a solid long-range shooter and with teams likely loading up the paint to try slowing down the three-headed monster the Eagles can deploy up front, Lemna will have a lot of space to operate.
Mason Martinson, Oak Grove
Martinson had a solid junior year for the Grovers, averaging better than 10 points per game. He seemed to take his game to another level this summer on the grassroots circuit and with opposing defenses focusing heavily on protecting the paint, he’ll the ball in his hands a ton with ample opportunity to make plays. If he can get his shooting percentages up a tick, he’ll be one of the best players in the region.
Preston Bohnenstingl Preston Bohnenstingl 6'0" | SG Wyndmere-Lidgerwood | 2021 State ND , Wyndmere/Lidgerwood
Wyndmere/Lidgerwood had a down year last winter but Bohnenstingl was a definite bright spot. The 6-foot combo guard is a dynamic shooter who can fill it up in a hurry. He’s a terrific 3-point shooter with deep, deep range and he’s quick enough to get to the rim and finish over length.
Kolby Vander Wal, Northern Cass
Vander Wal has all-region potential as a senior, as he’s one of the best two-way guards in the area. He’s a lockdown defender with the length and quickness to check just about any top-notch perimeter player. He showed over the summer on the grassroots circuit that he’s got some juice as a slasher and shot-maker too. Expect big things from him as a senior.
