With that in mind, here’s a look at the top go-to guys in Class A
Deonte Martinez Deonte Martinez 5'10" | PG Minot | 2021 State ND , Minot
Minot is losing an awful lot from a season ago, but Martinez gives them a legitimate Player-of-the-Year candidate at the point guard spot. The 5-foot-10 senior averaged 14 points, nearly five rebounds and four assists as a junior and was incredibly efficient from the field. He’ll have a massive offensive workload as a senior and he’ll have to help shephard in a new group of varsity regulars, but his ability to get to the paint and generate easy offense makes him the premier point guard in the WDA.
Will Obioha Will Obioha 6'6" | SF Grand Forks Red River | 2021 ND , Grand Forks Red River
Obioha missed the first half of his junior season with an injury but gave people a taste of what he’s capable of when he did come back, averaging 13.6 points and 5.9 rebounds. He’s going to have more offensive responsibility than he’s had before, as the Roughriders are graduating several key perimeter players from last year, but he’s got the ability to stuff the stat sheet in a big way.
Tyler Tollefson Tyler Tollefson 5'11" | SG Wahpeton | 2021 State ND , Wahpeton
Tollefson was a bright spot on a subpar Huskies team, averaging 14 points per game while shooting 40 percent from the 3-point line. If Wahpeton is going to be improved this year, Tollefson will be the guy leading the way. He’s an undersized combo guard, but he’s terrific both on and off the ball. He’s one of the best shooters in the EDC and with the Huskies graduating several key ballhandlers from last year, he’ll have an opportunity to handle the ball and engineer the offense more often.
Owen Hektner Owen Hektner 6'6" | SF Fargo Davies | 2021 State ND , Fargo Davies
Hektner established himself as one of the best role players in the EDC last year on a loaded Fargo Davies team, averaging 11 points and five rebounds while shooting better than 40 percent from the 3-point line. With the Eagles graduating eight of its top nine players, Hektner is the lone remnant of a team that reached the state semifinals. Can he make the transition from super utility player to ‘go-to guy’? Will Fargo Davies require that of him? Either way, he’ll see a significant uptick in opportunity on the offensive end of the floor, and his shooting and passing ability make him a good bet to put up strong numbers.
Carson Lamp Carson Lamp 6'0" | SG Jamestown | 2021 State ND , Jamestown
Lamp emerged as a legit go-to guy for the Bluejays down the stretch last season as he helped lead them to the state semifinals. The 6-foot senior guard is, for my money, the favorite to win the WDA Player-of-the-Year because he can score from all three levels, make plays for his teammates and defend just about anybody. He averaged 16 points and four assists last year and while those numbers may not go up a ton because Jamestown has a plethora of scoring options, his impact on the game can’t be overstated.
