So it’s time for some young wings to fill the void. Lots of good ones got experience on the club circuit this summer and are ready to rise into the upper echelon of wings in the area this fall.
Here is a look at some of the northeast Kansas-area wings who were the top risers this summer (in alphabetical order and with club and high school and grad year listed):
Kamryn Kaniper, SSA Hoops Elite Black 15U, Silver Lake, 2023:
Kaniper is a really interesting athlete. At 6-foot-4, he’s not gangly. He’s well built and extremely athletic. He can run and jump with the best players his size. He is versatile, helping bring the ball up the court, playing on the perimeter and in the lane, rebounding and guarding opponents of a variety of sizes and skills. He isn’t a guy who has to have the ball in his hands a ton, so his stats might not jump off the page. But Kaniper could be a difference maker this season.
Jack Lauer, SSA Hoops Elite Black 15U, Marysville, 2023:
Lauer is a 6-foot-1 guard/wing who can shoot from anywhere. Kaniper’s teammate this summer, Lauer has a variety of skills, including good ball handling in the open floor. He’s got good size and is willing to mix it up in the lane, and he is an aggressive offensive player. But his shooting skills could make him a player to watch very soon.
Brayden Meseke, SSA Hoops Elite Black 16U, Wabaunsee, 2022:
Meseke might not really be considered a ‘riser’ at this point. He earned all Mid-East League honors as a sophomore. On a team full of guards, Meseke provided toughness and muscle for SSA Black. He can play nearly every position and can score, as he demonstrated last year at Wabaunsee. With the Oliver brothers returning, Wabaunsee has a lot of talented youth making its way up.
Mason Thomas Mason Thomas 6'4" | SF Royal Valley | 2022 State KS , Kansas Hoggs 16U, Royal Valley, 2022:
Thomas is a 6-foot-3 tough guy who can do quite a bit of everything. He’s got long arms and an athletic build, and the grit to battle inside. He has a nice mid-range game, rebounds with tenacity, and is tough on defense. He hasn’t got a lot of headlines yet, but with Royal Valley returning a lot of talent, Thomas should not be overlooked.
