But some up-and-coming guards got a lot of experience on the club circuit this summer and are ready to rise into the upper echelon of guards in the area this fall.
Here is a look at some of the northeast Kansas-area guards who were the top risers this summer (in alphabetical order and with club and high school and grad year listed):
Carson Brading, Kansas Hoggs 17U, Jefferson West, 2021:
The senior will try to take up some of the slack left by graduates Quinn Neuenswander Quinn Neuenswander 6'5" | PF Jefferson West | 2020 State KS and Bryce Clements. He can shoot from anywhere and was a perimeter threat for the guard-heavy Hoggs this summer. He can handle the ball and get to the hole, and he is a good leader and quarterback. But his outside shot is his number one tool at the offensive end. On defense, he crashes the boards will for a 5-foot-10 guard and held his own against the athletic 17U competition.
Tate Brown, Kansas Hoggs 16U, Manhattan, 2022:
The 6-foot Brown really made a name for himself on the club circuit this summer, particularly when the Hoggs found themselves shorthanded at a couple of tournaments. The left-hander now needs to take advantage of a depleted Manhattan squad. Brown is quick and solidly built for the 6A high school rigors. He can drive, shoot, defend and handle the ball. His versatility should make him able to play a variety of roles for the Indians.
Cory Chatmon, KC United 16U, Leavenworth, 2022:
Chatmon is small, but he is quick and steady with the ball in his hands. He should be ready to get playing time as a point guard that can run an offense. He is capable of breaking away from a defender to create offense. And his quickness and hands make him tough on the defensive end.
Eli Oliver, SSA Hoops Elite White 15U, Wabaunsee, 2023:
Oliver is younger brother to Cade Oliver, who earned Mid-East league honorable mention honors as a sophomore. Eli gained valuable varsity experience as a freshman. He’s a lean 5-foot-11 guard who can is athletic and plays bigger than his size. He entered high school with the reputation as a shooter, but he has a versatile game, including mid-range ability and fine ball handling skills.
Kade Perine, SSA Hoops Elite White 15U, Rossville, 2023:
One of the smaller players on the summer circuit, Perine is a go-getter. He is a terror on defense because of his all-out intensity and quickness. He’s sneaky and always looking to steal a dribble or pick off a pass. On offense he is a facilitator and pushes the ball in the open floor. But he can get to the goal and score on his own as well.
