I would like to say “hats off” to those players continuing to push the envelope on improving their games in these adverse conditions. In addition, a special shout-out to all the parents sacrificing time and energy to give their sons or daughters the best opportunity.
With that in the fold, I would like to highlight some players who I believe are trending from mid-major offers to major targets. A lot of the following players are just beginning to tap into their potential.
Let’s jump into it..
Aidan Abell Aidan Abell 6'6" | SG Westminster Academy | 2022 State FL – Westminster Academy
2022 combo guard Aidan Abell Aidan Abell 6'6" | SG Westminster Academy | 2022 State FL had one of the best summers of any player I’d been following. The Lions junior has built-in size at 6-foot-5 and evolving athleticism. Abell has continued to improve his footwork to go along with his back-court length. This caveat allows him to defend multiple positions at an elite level. Abell is in a great place at Westminster Academy with head coach Ehren Wallhoff. In addition, the departure of Troy Boynton to Baylor HS in Tennessee will open him up to more opportunities. Abell is a three-level scorer who has improved on his outside shooting. As on the defensive side, Abell can maneuver his way into the lane and get above the rim with his physique. Keep in mind Abell still has two years (minimum) of high school play to go. Upwards of thirty schools have already shown interest and his stock continues to rise. I think Abell has ACC caliber potential.
Jessiah Pierre Johnson – University School
2023 Jessiah Pierre Johnson is a name to follow right now. The 6-foot-4 point guard already has offers from McNeese State and Bryant under his belt before putting the ball in the net at the Davie school. If you attend a game at U-School, prepare to see an aggressive guard attacking the rim. With a pro-level coach in Ron Oliver, JPJ should flourish in his new system. In addition, I think your going to see a high-level playmaker in the second half of games. Why? 2023 brute Jaylen Carey Jaylen Carey 6'8" | PF Westminster Academy | 2023 State #129 Nation FL should be softening up the core of a defense in the paint. The younger brother of Vernon Carey Jr. has really developed his body this summer. Thus, Johnson will push the tempo and finish off his opponent.
Andrew Akuchie Andrew Akuchie 6'8" | PF St. Thomas Aquinas | 2022 State FL – St. Thomas Aquinas
2022 Andrew Akuchie Andrew Akuchie 6'8" | PF St. Thomas Aquinas | 2022 State FL was one of the first players I saw on the high school circuit that I believed had high D-1 potential. You can just tell guys that have the “It” factor and the forward certainly has it. Akuchie has the natural length to be a disruption on both sides of the court. The current junior has improved on his ball-handling and his finish around the rim. If you are too conservative, Akuchie can punish you with a shot from the outside. With all of those circumstances intertwined, you are looking at a player who can leave you flat footed. Akuchie has been hearing from Yale, Florida Gulf Coast, DePaul, Utah State and Wofford. While all fantastic schools, I think Akuchie will receive more interest as he continues to add more offensive moves to his repertoire.
Faheim Meran Faheim Meran 6'5" | SF West Oaks | 2022 State FL – Miramar
2022 Faheim Meran Faheim Meran 6'5" | SF West Oaks | 2022 State FL is an emerging star in South Florida. The 6-foot-5 Patriot is versatile enough to play both guard spots and even make plays at the small forward position. Meran has an excellent cross-over dribble that will leave you in the rear-view mirror. Once you feel the breeze, Meran will be into the lane and finishing with either hand at the rim. The reigning state champions are in good hands with him on the floor. Meran is also a high-level rebounder, making his impact on the court more apparent.
