CJ O’Hara CJ O’Hara 6'4" | SF Park Center | 2023 State #285 Nation MN (6’4 2023 W, Howard Pulley 15u)- CJ was his usual self on the wing, attacking the basket and finishing at a high rate around the rim. He has great body control and has the explosive athleticism to elevate and finish close to the rim. CJ appears to have been working on his perimeter game as well, and looked comfortable shooting the three off the catch and dribble. Add in his ability to guard multiple spots at a high level on the defensive end, and you get one of the top 2023 prospects in the state.
Akeem Nelson Akeem Nelson 6'1" | PG Minnesota prep academy | 2022 MN (5’10 2022 PG, MN Prep)- Akeem was extremely aggressive getting to the basket, and he showed a lot of craft contorting his body to finish in complicated ways through traffic. At 5’10 he’s not the tallest player on the floor, but he’s able to elevate and hang in the air, keeping his chin at the rim to complete some difficult attempts. Akeem has a lot of toughness and plays with no fear, and it showed in his ability to get some tough buckets in the paint.
Dylan Omweno (6’ 2023 PG, MN Phenom)- Dylan has been one of the top 2023 performers I’ve seen this summer, and he continued his high level of play with Minnesota Phenom on Saturday. He’s an elusive guard with a quick first step and a nice hesitation move that he uses to open up space on the perimeter. Dylan can knock down the three point shot off the dribble, and the threat of his range opens up lanes for him to attack and get to the basket where he’s able to finish over size.
Donnavin Hinsz Donnavin Hinsz 6'6" | PF Columbia Heights | 2022 State MN (6’6 2022 F, MN Suns 16u)- Donnavin is a player with a lot of potential, as it’s hard to find players who can match his height, strength, and athleticism. At 6’6, Donnavin showed the ability to handle on the perimeter, and was confident pulling up from beyond the arc. In transition he has that explosive ability that allowed him to throw down to powerful dunks in the game I caught vs Howard Pulley 15u. With all of his physical tools and emerging skills, he’s a player to keep an eye on in the 2022 class.
Jon Haakenson Jon Haakenson 6'2" | SG Maple Grove | 2022 State MN (6’1 2022 G, Howard Pulley 16u)- Jon is one of those players who could go the whole game without scoring, and still manage to have a strong impact on the outcome. He’s in the upper echelon of perimeter defenders in the state, playing with a grit that’s tough to find. In a close matchup against OSA Crusaders, he showed no fear in guarding D1 offered 2021 players, and found success picking up full court with his ball pressure. Offensively he adds in a solid jumper, toughness to finish through contact, and solid vision to drive and kick it to an open teammate.
Ayouba Berthe Ayouba Berthe 6'4" | SF Park Center | 2022 State MN (6’4 2022 W, MN Phenom)- Park Center always seems to have an abundance of length and athleticism, and Ayouba Berthe Ayouba Berthe 6'4" | SF Park Center | 2022 State MN appears to be one of their next emerging prospects. Playing with Minnesota Phenom, Ayouba held his own going up against a plethora of talented prospects. He’s such a fluid athlete who is capable of guarding most spots on the floor at the high school level, and can finish consistently around the rim. An intriguing talent in the 2022 class.
Emmanuel Schmitter Emmanuel Schmitter 6'3" | SG Eagan | 2023 State MN (6’2 2023 G, Howard Pulley 15u)- Emmanuel had a solid weekend overall, but really stood out in a tough game against OSA Crusaders 16u. Emmanuel proved to be too quick for defenders to stick in front of, finding a lot of success attacking from the wings and finishing at the rim. He also added in a transition dunk to bolster his point total. Defensively, he ranks among 2023’s best, combining his elite athleticism with constant effort to stay in front of his man.
