After our series of articles on the Class of 2021 who should be valued, we now shift our attention to those in the Class of 2022 and those that need to be on the radar of college coaches.
We will continue to go through each conference to try and hit as many players as possible with the hopes of helping these juniors the attention of prospective college coaches.
Remington Newton – Mormon Trail
One-half of a talented Class of 2022 duo for Mormon Trail is Remington Newton.
Last year, Newton scored 266 points with 179 rebounds, 60 assists and 32 steals. The Saints won eight games and will look to improve upon that number with Newton back.
He shot almost 35 percent from the floor and buried a team-leading 18 three-pointers. Newton also got to the free throw line 81 times, tops for Mormon Trail.
Brayden Olson – Lamoni
The defending conference champions feature a talented member of the Class of 2022 in guard Brayden Olson.
Olson tallied 223 points with 125 rebounds, 78 steals and a team-high 72 assists. He also blocked 26 shots, which were tops.
A 46-percent shooter from the field, look for Olson to add to his three-point shooting this coming season.
Devin Arkema – Twin Cedars
It was a bit of a tough season for Twin Cedars this past winter, but with leading scorer Kade Dunkin and top rebounder Devin Arkema back, they could be in for better results.
Arkema, a Class of 2022 prospect, grabbed 158 total rebounds including seven per game. He also scored 189 points with 35 assists, 19 steals, nine blocks and 17 made triples on the season.
Malachi Johnson Malachi Johnson 5'9" | PG Ankeny Christian Academy | 2022 State IA – Ankeny Christian
Ankeny Christian pushed Lamoni for the Bluegrass Conference title last winter. While leading scorer Nic Worsham Nic Worsham 6'4" | SG Ankeny Christian Academy | 2020 State IA has moved on, the return of Class of 2022 guard Malachi Johnson Malachi Johnson 5'9" | PG Ankeny Christian Academy | 2022 State IA gives reason for hope.
Johnson averaged 5.5 assists per game last year, sporting a more than 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. He also scored 171 points with 95 rebounds, 38 steals and 21 made three-pointers.
Along with his 138 assists and just 41 turnovers, Johnson shot 43 percent from the field, 45 percent from deep and 75 percent at the free throw line.
Gabe Stripe – Mormon Trail
The other half of the Class of 2022 duo for Mormon Trail, Gabe Stripe is coming off a strong sophomore season.
Stripe recorded 257 points with 131 rebounds, 41 assists, 27 steals and a handful of blocked shots. He shot nearly 40 percent from the field and made 12 three-pointers while also shooting 76 percent at the free throw line.
