While I wasn’t able to be live in attendance at the Nets on Fire facility, I was able to catch the action via a live stream on BallerTV. Below are the first set of standout players from the Cream of the Crop Top 60 game.
Parker Strauss, 2023, Edison (CA) – Strauss had another good weekend in Utah, displaying his poised feel for the point guard position and ability to properly manage scoring and distributing opportunities for his team. The 6-foot-2 sophomore has an advanced basketball IQ and allows the game to come to him instead of forcing offensive actions.
Trent Perry, 2024, Harvard-Westlake (CA) – Perry’s game can be described in two words: “basketball player.” The 6-foot-2 freshman earned co-MVP honors of the Top 60 game because he was such an active player on both ends of the floor. His defensive energy created turnovers and transition scoring opportunities, while his ability to play without the ball, cut into open spots, and finish with either hand around the basket helped the team’s overall offensive continuity.
Ty Hendler Ty Hendler 6'3" | CG La Costa Canyon | 2023 State CA-S , 2023, La Costa Canyon (CA) – Hendler is a really smart and crafty combo guard whose combination of shooting ability off the catch and creativity off the bounce made him a tough cover. The 6-foot-3 sophomore moves well without the basketball and understands how to use screens to free himself space for open shots.
Ryder Elisaldez Ryder Elisaldez 6'1" | CG Bishop Gorman | 2024 State NV , 2024, Bishop Gorman (NV) – We liked the fact that Elisaldez seemed to always be in attack mode. The 6-foot-3 guard gets out and runs in transition where he uses his strength and athleticism to glide to the rim for paint finishes both through contact and above the rim. Elisaldez showed the ability to stretch the floor to the three-point line and attack driving lanes to score in the paint in the half-court setting.
Kollen Murphy Kollen Murphy 6'2" | PG Colony | 2023 State CA-S , 2023, Colony (CA) – Murphy played with a ton of confidence in this event and it was good to see that he’s tightened up his ball handling and ability to get into the paint where he finished efficiently around contact. The 6-foot-2 lefty showed an effective and quick right-to-left crossover that allowed him to either get by his defender to put pressure on the rim or create space for a step-back jumper.
