Several players showed marked improvement this summer since we had seen them last, and will now try to build on those new skills as we move in to the high school season. First up…
Izaiah Pankoke-Johnson Izaiah Pankoke-Johnson 6'1" | SG Norris | 2021 State NE – 6’1″ SG
Jitterbug? Energizer Bunny? Whatever highly-excitable creature you want to use to describe Izaiah will do the trick. He cuts hard almost all the time, attacks loose balls better than anyone on his team, and leads his team in transition with urgency. His motor isn’t the whole story, though. That motor gets him into the right positions where he then makes the intelligent play. He is great at shuffling his feet on a drive and delivering a well-timed swipe on the ball. He also has begun to understand how to steer and manipulate the man he is guarding. He isn’t the most gifted offensive player but he is great at earning penetration and making the right play as it presents itself.
Kwat Abdelkarim Kwat Abdelkarim 6'3" | CG Lincoln Northstar | 2021 State NE – 6’3″ CG
The headline of any scouting report on Kwat will highlight his athleticism or flashy finishing around the basket. He has added several other aspects to his game that are worth examining. He has always possessed strength for his size but there was a noticeable improvement in that area. It has improved his fluidity and balance on the court, and his drives and finishes at the basket are evidence of that jump. He has impressive body control which he uses to contort his body to find windows around the basket. He often makes these adjustments in mid-air. With his newfound strength he can absorb and finish through contact with ease at this level. There has been improvement in his shot, but he’s still largely a spot up shooter and will have to improve his pull-up game.
Trey Deveaux Trey Deveaux 6'5" | PF Norris | 2021 State NE – 6’4″ PF
Trey is a very physical player at 6’4″. He can sky for rebounds and has the frame to battle for them consistently. He uses his shoulders to muscle past opponents on offense and finish strong. He has improved both his handle and mid-range shot, and a logical next step for his development could be to develop a face-up game in those zones on the court.
Carter Glenn – 5’11″ PG
Carter provided a lot of the energy and grit this team needed. He relentlessly attacks the basket when he finds openings and can make the right pass when he draws attention. Even at his height, he is good enough at finishing inside thanks to his strength through contact. He consistently makes the right play at the right time.
Pierce Bazil – 6’3″ CG
Pierce is a smooth mover, and was the most skilled offensive player for Lincoln Supreme this summer. It’s not necessarily any particular move that makes him so good on offense, but it’s how he gets from one place to the other that makes him so talented. He manipulates defenses with his eyes, but also using his body. It’s something hard to describe in writing but I think it’s obvious if you watch him. He combos pivots, ball fakes, and spins in the paint. Because he has several options, he uses his mental game to read the defense live and choose which of those options suits him best in that moment. His stock has been climbing thanks to his impressive AAU summer, and I expect that to continue with Lincoln Northeast.
Blake Daberkow Blake Daberkow 6'7" | C Macclay | 2021 State NE – 6’8″ C
You’re getting a classic, hard-working big man when you sub Blake in the game. He fights hard for post position, keeps it rather easily thanks to his size, and finishes with either hand. Rebounding is maybe the strongest part of his game and he puts a lot of effort into that aspect of his game. He has nice touch close to the rim, but his scoring ability is limited outside of a few feet. A hook shot would do him wonders, especially for situations when he can’t rely on size against his opponent.
