Many players have shown enough simply on tape and colleges are watching now more than ever as they navigate these untested waters.
Here is a look at some of the summer stock risers from Florida in the 2023 class.
Part 3
Woody Machado | 6-3 | Oldsmar Christian
Playing for various local Tampa area teams this summer, Machado was one of the best guards in his class every time he hit the floor. He is a rising player who was scoring in bunches in nearly every game. He is dunking with ease now and finishing above the rim. His transition ball movement and attacking are both superb. His shooting efficiency is solid from long range. Machado is a complete athlete already and with more muscle and experience, he will flourish quickly at SIAA school Oldsmar Christian.
Dereck McCray | 6-0 | The Villages
A cousin of former The Villages star and current UF sophomore Tre Mann, McCray is well on his way. He can shoot it from anywhere on the floor and isn’t afraid to hurt you when left open for a split second. He has a smoothness on his drive to the hoop and likes to finish with his floater. His mid-range is valuable too. As McCray adds height and more time on the floor, he is destined to break out in a big way for The Villages.
Jamauri Sands | 6-2 | Oak Ridge
A very gifted catch and shoot player, Sands is part of an always athletic Oak Ridge group. He can create his own jumper by breaking down defenders. He attacks the rim when he needs to but relies on his jump shot for comfort. A smart and crafty player, Sands is as unselfish as they come. He is a vocal presence who is always looking for the next play on both sides of the ball. Sands has been flourishing for E1T1 in tournaments this summer.
Eduardo Placer Eduardo Placer 6'1" | CG Windermere Prep | 2023 State FL | 6-3 | Oviedo Master’s
With a UNF offer under his belt, the confidence that Placer is playing with now compared to last year as a freshman is impressive to see. Much like his older brother, UNF guard Jose Place, Eduardo plays with a complete purpose, smarts and a steady handle. He can shoot it well and he is packed with upside. As long as he fills out and keeps building his game, he will be a major factor.
Pierce Shirk | 6-2 | Bolles
Up in Jacksonville, Shirk is an underrated sophomore. He is a physically gifted and a strong young prospect at his size. Shirk possesses a nice set of moves going to the basket including a spin that works well. He is a power player who also has a soft touch. Shirk is a player to monitor in North Florida.
Dawson Barr | 6-3 | Oviedo
Always making the right plays on the floor, Barr plays the game the right way. He is light on his feet and is a very fluid athlete. Barr has some good speed and a crafty jumper. He needs to add muscle to his frame but is a finesse player who can score in a variety of ways already.
