This article focuses on some of the better PGs that are #51-125 as there are some true diamonds in the rough when looking at some of these names. Here are just a few PGs colleges should be keeping an eye on.
Jerry Saunders Jerry Saunders 6'0" | SG Pickerington North | 2022 State OH (Pickerington North)- The 6’0 guard hasn’t had a real chance to show us during the HS season his true talent due to the firepower at Pick North. Now an upperclassmen, he is going to be able to show us his leadership and scoring capabilities. A solid midrange shooter; Saunders can create offensive opportunities for himself either on the bounce or creating space to shoot.
Ajay Sheldon Ajay Sheldon 6'2" | PG Dublin Coffman | 2022 State OH (Dublin Coffman)- Sheldon gets all over the floor and covers so much area with his hustle and speed. At 6’1, he has a high basketball IQ and disrupts passing lanes. Can’t say enough about his hustle as he truly can lead a defense and is a floor general. Offensively impresses with a quick jumpshot. Especially impresses with his ability to use the dribble to create space and take shots.
Robert Dorsey Robert Dorsey 5'10" | PG Northland | 2022 State OH (Northland)- One of the better guards under 6’0 but still an effective player. Dorsey really penetrates the paint and is such a difficult guy to defend on the perimeter. Incredible speed and shifty with the ball in his hands. Breaks down defenders and willing to take tough contested shots in the lane. Should see improvement in his HS season as a floor general in the backcourt.
JJ Simmons JJ Simmons 5'10" | PG Beechcroft | 2022 State OH (Beechcroft)- It still baffles me that Simmons came off the bench for JH1 Elite when I saw them this Summer as he is one of the best players on that talented team. One of the best pull-up shooters I’ve seen this Summer and truly has an incredible shooting touch. Dangerous once he gets going 3PT and beyond. Does more than just shoot the ball. Facilitates an offense with great vision and good passing. Could be a sleeper for an NAIA school.
Kollin Tolbert (Mount Healthy)- Tolbert is a more under-the-radar talent in the Cincinnati area, but has shown he can excel on big stages. Impressed first and foremost as a perimeter defender. Combines speed with athleticism to create issues for opposing guards. Didn’t make a ton of flashy plays, but was willing to take charges in an open gym setting which always impresses me. Shown he can score and lead a team on the offensive end but also can really setup guys to score themselves. Could be on the verge of a breakout season in 2020-21.
Ryan Chew Ryan Chew 5'11" | PG Bellbrook | 2022 State OH (Alter)- One of Dayton’s most exciting prospects as Chew has found himself on college radars with his incredible speed and playmaking abilities. Versatile and able to play in either half court focused sets or more up tempo transition offenses. Very quick decision maker and makes the right pass. Showed a more consistent 3PT shot this Summer to go with his elite passing abilities. Will play a more comfortable role with Alter versus being a more go-to player had he stayed at Bellbrook.
Derrick James Derrick James 5'9" | PG Canal Winchester | 2022 State OH (St. Charles)- The lefty guard excels in the transition game; advancing the ball and running the offense. Comfortable leading the charge and has nice change of direction and speed when running the floor. In a half court setting, still looks comfortable and is explosive using just one dribble. Uses a plethora of moves to beat defenders, but specifically utilized the hesitation dribble to win 1-on-1 matchups. Shown he can defend the perimeter and has the footwork to hang with even the fastest guards. With several departures at St. Charles, this HS season will give us a chance to see what James can really do as a leader and a primary scorer.
