Some players stood out during the drills and some really exploded during the games of 5-on-5. Overall, this is a list of players who either popped during drills, games or both and who also displayed a level of competitiveness that outshined the others.
Daylen Fullen- Eastmoor Academy: Fullen was one of the best players during individual drills, executing the little details of what he was being taught and consistently knocking down jumpers after every move. When it came to the 5-on-5 game he played his position to perfection, being scrappy on defense and nailing timely shots when his team got stagnant. Fullen showed his increased passing ability numerous times during the evening as well.
Javion Williams- Briggs: His head coach Tony Rice warned the city of this; if this monster can keep his grades right then he has a chance to be a game changer. Williams can guard most people on the court defensively because of his strength and speed and proved that opting to switch onto and guard Amani Lyles Amani Lyles 6'7" | C Beechcroft | 2022 State OH . He has the backyard offensive game that suits this type of atmosphere and put it on display, pulling up and nailing jumpers while being able to get past the defender as well.
Amani Lyles Amani Lyles 6'7" | C Beechcroft | 2022 State OH – Beechcroft: Say it out loud as you read this; Amani Lyles Amani Lyles 6'7" | C Beechcroft | 2022 State OH is the best big man in the Columbus City League. Thank you. Lyles showcased his chemistry with teammate and friend JJ Simmons JJ Simmons 5'10" | PG Beechcroft | 2022 State OH during competitive 3-on-3 drills, rolling to the rim and finishing at different angles. During the 5-on-5 sessions, Lyles was able to heat up from deep and bury numerous shots which prompted mini roars in the gym. Did not start out his usual defensive self but as the games got more intense, more shots were blocked.
Aaron Williams- Eastmoor Academy: The biggest winner of the evening was this young man who played with confidence and swagger, even chirping to older players on the sidelines. Williams was crisp during drills, taking them more serious than others. In the 5-on-5 games he ran his team beautifully, with wonderful passing and scoring when he wanted to. He looked like the best player on the court every game, on both ends of the floor. Taking the honors of MVP of the night will only bolster his confidence.
