After our series of articles on the Class of 2021 who should be valued, we now shift our attention to those in the Class of 2022 and those that need to be on the radar of college coaches.
We will continue to go through each conference to try and hit as many players as possible with the hopes of helping these juniors the attention of prospective college coaches.
Mason Laven – Storm Lake St. Mary’s
Class of 2022 prospect Mason Laven led Storm Lake St. Mary’s in scoring a year ago, averaging 13.5 points and finishing the season with 311 points in all.
He shot over 35 percent from the field, 38 percent from the three-point line and 75 percent at the charity stripe.
Along with his scoring output, Laven also recorded 57 rebounds, 24 steals and 22 assists.
Trey Jungers Trey Jungers 5'11" | SF Newell-Fonda | 2022 State IA – Newell-Fonda
A talented all-around athlete for Newell-Fonda, Trey Jungers Trey Jungers 5'11" | SF Newell-Fonda | 2022 State IA shined bright on the basketball court last winter.
Jungers, a Class of 2022 player, scored 304 points with 86 assists, 85 rebounds and 66 steals. He knocked down almost 47 percent of his field goal attempts and was 26-for-58 from long-range while cashing in on 74 percent of his free throws.
The Mustangs return Jungers along with three other players who started games from a team that went 18-5 and reached the Class 1A substate quarterfinals.
Kolson Kruse Kolson Kruse 5'11" | SG Southeast Valley | 2022 State IA – Southeast Valley
Once he was fully healthy, Kolson Kruse Kolson Kruse 5'11" | SG Southeast Valley | 2022 State IA has a breakout sophomore season for Southeast Valley.
Kruse finished with 291 points, averaging just under 14 per game. He also recorded 61 steals, 60 rebounds and 37 assists, all while shooting 47 percent from the field and 42 percent from the three-point line.
Kruse pairs with inside force and classmate Aaron Graves Aaron Graves 6'5" | PF Southeast Valley | 2022 State IA to give the Jaguars quite a 1-2 punch. Graves has already committed to the University of Iowa to play football.
Joshua Dietrich – South Central Calhoun
One game away from reaching the state tournament, South Central Calhoun will rebuild around 10 returning players including Class of 2022’s Joshua Dietrich.
Dietrich recorded 168 points with 144 rebounds while coming off a bench a year ago. He shot almost 54 percent from the floor and 70 percent at the free throw stripe, adding a team-high 46 blocks and 37 steals.
Tyler Schmitt – East Sac County
East Sac County runs everything through Camden Schroeder Camden Schroeder 6'5" | SF East Sac County | 2021 State IA , and for good reason. But when opposing defenses take him away, Tyler Schmitt is there to pick it up.
Schmitt scored 146 points with 108 rebounds, 12 blocks, 10 steals and 10 assists last year in 19 games coming off the bench.
He shot 58 percent from the field and is one of six players back alongside Schroeder in 2020-21 for the Raiders, who went 16-7.
