These five players are a combination of established prep stars with a couple of up-and-comers. One thing is for sure. They should be some of the top performers in the season to come.
Assumption Parish
Jaden Tyler Jaden Tyler 6'0" | CG Assumption | 2021 State LA | 6’1″ | Assumption – The 8-4A district MVP and second team all-state performer is one of the best guards returning this coming year. He can pretty much do it all on both ends of the floor and in a dominate fashion. Tyler can shoot the three, drive to the rack, and play solid perimeter defense. Jaden is just as dangerous playing off the ball as he is on and should be on the short list of candidates for Gatorade POY and Mr. Basketball next season.
St. James Parish
Sai’vion Jones Sai’vion Jones 6'7" | C St. James | 2021 State LA | 6’6″ | St. James – Jones is not only the best returning basketball players in St. James Parish, he is one of the best defensive ends in the country. The four star defensive end committed to LSU earlier during the pandemic. He is also a reigning all-district player (9-3A) and an all-state honorable mention. Jones bangs with the best of them and scores inside. If he plays basketball next year, he will again be one of the best in all of 3A.
Ascension Parish
Troy Dunn Troy Dunn 6'5" | CG East Ascension | 2022 State LA | 6’2″ | East Ascension – Dunn is a player who tried to find his role on a senior-heavy team and carved out his niche. He was able help on the defensive end with blocks and steals which turned into buckets for the Spartans. Now, with the departure of Hobert Grayson (college) and Camryn Carter (move), Dunn will be able to put his stamp on EA. He can shoot the cover off the ball. With any additions to his game, he will set him apart.
West Baton Rouge Parish
Tawasky Johnson Tawasky Johnson 6'0" | PG Port Allen | 2021 State LA | 6’1″ | Port Allen – Jones is one of the most athletic point guards in either class. He has some bounce and can finish above the rim if the defender is not careful. The district 8-2A first teamer has been one of the most important elements in the Pelicans resurgence the last two years which has resulted in a state title and one runner-up. Johnson has a consistent perimeter shot and gets to the rack better than most. He is a game changer.
Iberville Parish
Latral Weary | 6’1″ | Plaquemine – The 7-4A first team player has a chance to be a breakout player during this coming season. He formed a great backcourt duo with Jazz Provo last season when the Green Devils made a second round playoff run. Now, he has a chance to be the primary scorer and leader. Weary is an above average defender who can score from multiple spots on the floor. If he remains healthy, Weary can have a great season.
We will continue with making our way through all sixty-four parishes as we travel down I-10 and I-12 to the lower end of the Boot. These parishes have provided the last three players of the year ( Reece Beekman Reece Beekman 6'2" | SG Scotlandville | 2020 State #45 Nation LA , Jalen Cook Jalen Cook 6'0" | PG Walker | 2020 State #98 Nation LA , and Javonte Smart). Maybe they will have another as we wrap up the volumes in this series.
