Continue ReadingUnder head coach Tyler Brown, the West Side Pirates lost in the state championship game at the 2A level. The Pirates finished their season with an overall record of 23-5 and an 8-0 conference record. West Side will look to return to the state championship game despite the loss of a few seniors who contributed big minutes and lots of points for the Pirates last season. As the season progresses, West Side will look to a young, talented roster with lots of varsity experience to help propel them to victory and lead them in close games. West Side loves to push the ball in transition and getting into the open court will allow the Pirates to wear down their opponents. Continue reading for a breakdown of a few players that I think will be key for the Pirates in the 2020-21 season.
Bryler Shurtliff Bryler Shurtliff 6'1" | SG West Side | 2022 State ID , 2022: Bryler does a little bit of everything for the Pirates. Listed at 6’1″ and a power-forward, Shurtliff rarely plays at a single position and is one of the best shooters on the team. Last season, he had multiple games with 3 and 4 made three-pointers and he loves to step back and knockdown open threes. One of Bryler’s greatest strengths is getting to the corner or running the wing during fast breaks for easy spot-up opportunities. Shurtliff plays hard on both ends of the floor and his motor allows him to guard opposing bigs and also have enough energy and stamina to knockdown much needed threes on the other end. I expect Shurtliff to lead the West Side Pirates in the upcoming season through his shooting and scoring abilities when they need it most.
Blaze Brown Blaze Brown 5'10" | PG West Side | 2022 State ID , 2022: Blaze is a great point guard for the Pirates and plays extremely hard. He pushes the ball in transition, locks-up opposing guards, and can knock down the open shot. Blaze also rebounds very well for a guard and had multiple games last season with 7 or 8 rebounds. He has a great feel for the game and plays like an upperclassman. Brown is a knockdown shooter from outside and has the ability to make an extra pass or drive and kick when defenders close out too hard. Brown is young and will be a great leader for the Pirates as he continues to improve and finds his best role with the team. Watch next season for Blaze Brown Blaze Brown 5'10" | PG West Side | 2022 State ID to lead the way for the West Side Pirates as they attempt to make another run at the 2A state championship.
