Continue ReadingThe Ambrose School, located in Meridian, has been quietly evolving into a powerhouse in the smaller divisions in the state of Idaho. The Archers are always in the running for a state championship and have produced a handful of great players who have gone on to prove themselves at the collegiate level as well. After winning the state title at the 1A DI level last season, the Archers are moving to the 2A level where they will face lots of great competition on their quest for another shot at winning a state championship. The Ambrose School finished the 2019-20 season with an impressive conference record of 10-0 and an overall record of 24-2 under head coach Ken Sugarman. Continue reading for a breakdown of some of the standout players for the Archers.
Hudson Hughes Hudson Hughes 5'11" | PG Ambrose | 2022 State ID , 2022: Hudson comes from a great basketball family that has a long-standing history with The Ambrose School. Hughes contributed big minutes for the Archers last season and will look to help them even more along the way in the upcoming 2020-21 season. Hudson has a smooth stroke from outside and always has his feet ready for catch-and-shoot opportunities. Off the dribble, Hughes can penetrate all the way to the rim and finish with either hand, or dish to the open man for a great shot. Hudson plays like a veteran and has a great feeling for the game as a whole. I would expect to see more scoring from Hughes next season and an increase in productivity across the board.
Johnny Sugarman Johnny Sugarman 6'0" | PG Ambrose | 2022 State ID , 2022: From the very beginning, Sugarman has had an unfair advantage over his peers: being a coach’s son. Johnny has been a gym-rat from a very young age and it shows in his very impressive skill set. He has great handles and can get to anywhere on the court quickly and effectively. He can pull up and shoot the midrange, attack the rim and finish with both hands, or knock down an off-balance 3 after coming off a barrage of screens. Johnny is an underrated passer as well with great court vision who can hit the open man at the correct time. Sugarman can get hot in a hurry and will lead the Archers again next season on their journey back to the state title. After achieving first team all-state honors last season, the sky is the limit for Sugarman in the 2020-21 season.
