The Show-Me State was one of a handful of states around the country to get its football season off the ground. Several of the players that Prep Hoops Missouri have followed in the past six weeks have now traded in their basketball uniforms for helmets and shoulder pads for the fall. Here is what some of those players did during opening weekend.
Zaide Lowery 6’3″ Springfield Kickapoo: A talented 2023 wide receiver, Lowery caught two touchdown passes in the Chiefs’ 28-7 victory over Camdenton on Friday night. The first score came on a leaping reception over a defensive back on a fade route. Lowery played for the Missouri Flight 16U team during the summer.
Always Wright Always Wright 6'2" | SG Joplin | 2022 State MO 6’2″ Joplin: The 2022 quarterback made his debut as a starter on Friday night and completed 17 of 21 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles’ 41-40 victory over Webb City in a big Friday night showdown of state finalists from last season. Wright played for the SSA Elite Black 17U squad during the summer.
Ryan Hoerstkamp 6’4″ Washington: The 2021 tight end/defensive end was a monster on both sides of the ball in the Bluejays 54-13 victory. The highlight of his performance was a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown. Hoerstkamp is one of the state’s top football prospects. He has already committed to the University of Missouri. Hoerstkamp played for the Mid-Mo Rebels 17U squad.
Mason Ballay Mason Ballay 5'11" | PG Mt Vernon | 2021 State MO 6’0″ Mt. Vernon: The 2021 quarterback threw three touchdown passes in his debut as a starter, including the game-winning pass with 20 seconds left in a 21-13 victory over Cassville. Ballay played for the Missouri Flight 17U team during the summer.
Cameron Lee 6’1″ Duchesne: The 2023 wide receiver caught two passes for 85 yards and a touchdown in the Pioneers 333-0 victory over Francis Howell North. Lee played for the Gateway Basketball Club 15U squad during the summer.
Ryan Schwendeman Ryan Schwendeman 6'4" | SF St. Dominic | 2022 State MO 6’4″ St. Dominic: The 2022 tight end caught five passes for 99 yards in the Crusaders’ 43-20 victory over St. Charles West. Schwendeman played for the Gateway-Knights’ 16U squad during the summer.
Tanner Lanes Tanner Lanes 6'3" | SG Harrisburg | 2022 State MO 6’4″ Harrisburg: The 2022 quarterback threw for 148 yards and three touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 34-0 victory over Paris. Lanes played for the Mid-Mo Elite 16U team during the summer.
Donte Washington 6’0″ Joplin: The 2023 wide receiver caught six passes for 82 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown reception in the Eagles’ 41-40 victory over Webb City. Washington played for the ShoMe Assault 15U squad.
Javan Noyes 5’6″ Mid-Buchanan: The 2021 quarterback rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns and threw two more touchdowns passes in Mid-Buch’s 41-8 victory over Princeton on Friday night.
