Here are some of the players who looked good from 16U play on Saturday:
Justin Wohlers Justin Wohlers 6'6" | PF Lake City | 2022 State MN , MN Lightning Ellerbusch
Wohlers has enjoyed a breakout – albeit abbreviated – summer with MN Lightning showing parts of his game that he didn’t get to show over the last two years with Lake City. For his high school team, he’s been an elite 3-point shooter who does almost all of his work in catch-and-shoot situations and from deep. He’s not only gotten bigger and stronger, but he’s clearly put in work to advance his dribble drive game to the point that he is beating guys routinely off the dribble and finishing through contact at the rim. He’s still a terrific long-range shooter, but he’s blossoming into what looks like a dynamic all-around scorer now.
Ahjany Lee Ahjany Lee 6'9" | C Byron | 2022 State #145 Nation MN , D1 Minnesota Prospects – Culp
The hype train on Lee is running out of room and for good reason. He’s rangy, bouncy and incredibly fluid for a 6-foot-8/9 individual. And his growth on the basketball court over the last year or so has been astounding. His offensive game is further along than its reputation, as he’s got great touch on his jumper, a solid looking release and decent enough handles to get to the rim on a rip move in the mid-post. He has a tendency to float to the perimeter and ball-watch a little too much, but when he’s active, he’s got nightmare matchup potential because he can finish in traffic with ease, but can also step away and be a threat to shoot it.
Jamal Ambrose, Gain Elite Minnesota
Ambrose was one of the more impressive players I saw Saturday. He’s listed at 6-foot-10 and he’s a big, strong, active interior presence. He flashed some potential as a pop guy with good form and soft touch, but was also perfectly willing to mash smaller people in the paint. He has good footwork and plays with good understanding of how to use his body to shield defenders. And he does a great job extending his arms and contesting shots at the rim without fouling.
Malcolm Jones Malcolm Jones 6'9" | C Prior Lake | 2022 State MN , D1 Minnesota 16U
Jones has been among the top forward prospects in the 2022 class for a while and it’s easy to see why every time he plays. He’s big, strong, physical and skilled. He isn’t going to wow with fluid athleticism or flashy perimeter skills, but he’s an effective interior presence who sets good screens, rolls hard to the rim, finishes in traffic and can create his own shot with an array of moves in the low post.
Lewis Caregeor, Gain Elite Minnesota
Caregeor was a bright spot for Gain Elite and made a major impact on both ends of the floor seemingly because of incredible effort. He’s long, rangy and athletic; but above all the physical gifts, he just played really hard. He crashed the offensive glass and created numerous extra scoring opportunities for his team. He cuts hard off the ball and was able to score several buckets in traffic because of his energy. And on the defensive end, he does a great job being in position to help his teammates off the ball while also having the ability to recover and guard bigger or smaller guys. He looks like a promising player.
Walker Liu, D1 Minnesota Prospects – Tiran
Liu is an athletic, mobile forward who plays like his hair is on fire on every possession. He’s got pretty good ball skills and showed he can put the ball on the floor. He’s a capable finisher in traffic because he elevates well. And he’s a worker on the defensive end of the floor while contributing on the glass.
