Here are some of the players who looked good from 16U play on Saturday:
Tamin Lipsey, D1 Minnesota 17U
Lipsey was the best player on the floor in D1 Minnesota’s win over Alabama Celtics. He was terrific to start the game getting into the paint and scoring. He was excellent at controlling the tempo and facilitating – allowing the team to work inside out to a plethora of forwards and he is an absolute grinder on the defensive end of the floor.
Emmet Johnson, D1 Minnesota 16U
Johnson is a top-notch football prospect and that translates to the basketball court. He’s a terrific athlete who plays spring-loaded. He’s explosive in transition, getting to and finishing at the rim. His defensive pressure is excellent too, as he’s constantly harassing opposing ballhandlers and anyone who has the ball in his vicinity uncomfortable.
Kobe Kirk, MN Heat Grow
Kirk and the rest of the Heat Grow outfit weren’t met with much resistance in the early game Saturday, but he looked terrific on the wing. The 6-foot-2 Mounds View swingman has a pretty perimeter jumper and plays with an understanding of spacing and how to get open both in transition and in the halfcourt. He’s an unselfish passer who shows the willingness to turn down decent shots for great shots.
Trenten DeCook, MN Lightning Ellerbusch
DeCook was impressive on both ends of the floor for Lightning Ellerbusch. He’s a grinder on the defensive end, putting solid pressure on guys he’s defending. He’s not real tall, but he’s strong and extremely quick, so he’s able to get up into guys and make life difficult for them to get good shots. He’s explosive off the bounce and does a good job probing the paint for both scoring and assist opportunities.
Jamez Garner Jamez Garner 5'10" | PG Robbinsdale Armstrong | 2022 State MN , Phenom
Want handles? Garner is your guy. The Columbia Heights product has the ball on a string and he gets wherever he wants on the floor because he combines them with a shifty and herky-jerky style. He’s an excellent facilitator and can make shots from the mid-range and in efficiently.
Jack Manning Jack Manning 6'5" | C Thief River Falls | 2023 State MN , Playmakers North Showcase
Manning was excellent in Playmakers North’s loss to MN Lightning Saturday, making plays on both ends of the floor. He’s an active cutter off the ball, who has a great knack for timing his cuts to free himself for scoring opportunities, and he plays well through contact. He’s also a physical and athletic defensive player who uses his length to disrupt the passing lanes and he’s got the quickness and length to stick with ballhandlers and contest shots.
