Last season’s leader at 24.8 ppg – Jesse White Jesse White 6'0" | CG Sam Barlow | 2020 State OR (2020 Barlow) has moved on – but several others are back to pile on the points and hopefully lead their squads far into the post-season.
Here are the top returning scorers for 2020-21 (listed with averages and last year’s ranking in the category).
Drew Carter Drew Carter 6'3" | SG Tigard | 2021 OR (2020 Tigard) – 24.35 ppg – #2
The Colorado football/basketball commit returns as the leading scorer in the state having finished just slightly behind White. The 6-foot-3 wing does it at all three levels, hitting from long range at a good percentage (.368), from two (.505 overall field goal percentage), and at the hoop where he was one of the top guys in the state to get to the line (136 total free throws made). He’ll still be the #1 option at Tigard this season so expect those numbers to possibly increase even more.
Nathan Meithof Nathan Meithof 6'5" | SG McNary | 2021 State OR (2021 McNary) – 22.1 ppg – #4
Meithof led 6A in scoring much of the year before running out of gas at the end of the season but was still good enough to finish in the Top Five. The 6-foot-4 lefty is very crafty off the dribble and scores off the bounce, but also has the capability to hit from long range (58 threes, .423 3pt%) and he can also get to the line (103-for-152 ft). While his teammates will be more experienced this season, once again much will expected out of Meithof so expect his scoring average to remain near the top of the state.
Ben Gregg Ben Gregg 6'8" | SF Clackamas | 2021 #50 Nation OR (2021 Clackamas) – 21.4 ppg – #5
The biggest inside-outside scoring threat returning in 2021-22 is Gregg, who clearly showed that class was just a number making the transition to 6A. The 6-foot-9 forward certainly did his damage posting up – easily dominating smaller defenders – but also stepped outside the paint to either create off the dribble and draw fouls (117-for-145 ft, .807 ft%) or step back and knock down threes (48 threes, .387 3pt%). Clackamas has solid offensive options around Gregg, but still look for him to have a huge year on the offensive end.
Darius Gakwasi Darius Gakwasi 6'5" | SG Central Catholic | 2021 State OR (2021 Central Catholic) – 16.3 ppg – #13
Central Catholic had a very balanced squad last season but their high-octane offense tallied up a lot of points and Gakwasi led the way for the Rams. The 6-foot-5 wing is very skilled and especially flashed a smooth jumper last year from distance (45 thres, .446 3pt%). Gakwasi can get to the rim off the dribble and also has the ability to post up smaller defenders. The Rams will once again have balance but don’t be surprised if Gakwasi’s numbers approach the 20 ppg mark.
Dane Erikstrup Dane Erikstrup 6'10" | C Beaverton | 2021 State OR (2021 Beaverton) – 15.7 ppg – #14
Erikstrup ended up leading the Metro League in scoring and it’s not surprising considering he was the one player in the conference that opposing defenses geared towards stopping each and every night. At 6-foot-10 he towers over most defenders and he’s proven himself as a great offensive rebounder especially off his own misses. Erikstrup also has a very nice face-up jumper past the three-point arc although he’ll likely do most of his damage in the paint his senior season.
