The heady 5-foot-10, 155-pound point guard from La Salle normally spends a lot of time on the road, mainly playing club hoops. But while the decision was made for him to not do that this year, Boyd has definitely stayed busy – not only with playing hoops but also interacting with potential future college programs.
“It feels kind of strange not traveling this summer so it feels different,” Boyd said. “But I’ve just been trying to do what I can do to stay in shape with the basketball in my hands.”
Since he didn’t play club basketball, Boyd has focused on individual work. He noted that he’s been working out mainly with former Clackamas 6A Player of the Year Elijah Gonzales four to five times a week, along with trainer Kumbeno Memory a couple of times a week. He’s been at 24-Hour Fitness as well and La Salle has started doing some open workouts with new head coach Sean Kelly.
“I’ve honestly just been working out a lot,” Boyd said. “I haven’t really been focusing on anything specific with my skill, but just trying to make sure that everything is up to bar or better. I’m also trying to get stronger.”
Another thing Boyd has done is interact quite a bit with college coaches. He’s been proactive about reaching out to schools and sending tape and the high-academic performer has received quite a bit of feedback from a whole range of schools, from Division I (Boise State, Brown, Bryant, Northern Arizona, San Jose State, Yale), Division II (Alaska-Anchorage, Barry, Cal State San Marcos, Chaminade, Point Loma), and a whole host of Division III programs (including Augustana, Cal Lutheran, Grinnell).
“Towards the beginning into the middle of summer, I was reaching out to a lot of schools, and then a bunch of them actually got back to me,” Boyd said. “There have been some that have been reaching out more, but none that have really stood out, so I’m kind of just keeping everything open.”
Boyd has enjoyed the feedback that he’s gotten thus far. “They’ve been saying that they like how I play with the ball and how I defend with my school,” Boyd said. “The say that they like how I’ve lead and not just shoot. I can’t remember the school but one of them said that they saw some film from earlier in my high school career and said that my defense has improved a lot. So that gives me some confidence.”
Boyd could be getting more attention soon. He recently made a trip to Chicago to participate in the All-Academic Basketball Showcase and impressed, scoring 20 points in a championship game victory. As his recruitment develops, Boyd is certainly looking forward to this upcoming season at La Salle and gave his thoughts on his new coach.
“He seems like a really good guy and he seems like he lets us just play,” Boyd said. “He’s just going to let us do our thing. And he’s working with us – when we’re in the gym, he’s out there sweating, getting rebounds for stuff like that.”
Boyd currently ranks as the #23 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
