After our series of articles on the Class of 2021 who should be valued, we now shift our attention to those in the Class of 2022 and those that need to be on the radar of college coaches.
We will continue to go through each conference to try and hit as many players as possible with the hopes of helping these juniors the attention of prospective college coaches.
Hogan Franey Hogan Franey 6'0" | CG Martensdale-St. Mary's | 2022 State IA – Martensdale-St. Mary’s
A three-point specialist who could also handle the ball, Class of 2022 prospect Hogan Franey Hogan Franey 6'0" | CG Martensdale-St. Mary's | 2022 State IA should be poised for a big 2020-21 season.
Franey scored 238 points with 88 assists, 67 rebounds, 33 steals and a team-high 39 made three-pointers a year ago for Martensdale-St. Mary’s. He shot nearly 46 percent from the floor and over 36 percent from the three-point line.
The Blue Devils reached the Class 1A state tournament, finishing 23-4 before a loss to Montezuma. They went a perfect 13-0 to claim the Pride of Iowa Conference title.
Cale Ecklund – East Union
The loss of leading scorer Kaden Kirkland opens a spot for Cale Ecklund to slide into.
Ecklund recorded 237 points as a sophomore, adding 61 assists, 48 steals and 34 rebounds. He was effective from all spots on the court, making 41 percent of his field goal and knocking down 32 three-pointers.
Along with all of that, Ecklund got to the free throw line often, attempting 61 shots and making nearly 61 percent of those.
Matthew Boothe Matthew Boothe 6'0" | CG Central Decatur | 2022 State IA – Central Decatur
To challenge Martensdale-St. Mary’s for the top spot in the Pride of Iowa Conference Central Decatur will need another strong season out of Matthew Boothe Matthew Boothe 6'0" | CG Central Decatur | 2022 State IA .
Boothe, a Class of 2022 player, finished last year with 227 points, knocking down nearly 50 percent of his field goals with 32 made three-pointers. He was also effective at the charity stripe, making almost 76 percent of his attempts.
Boothe also added 85 rebounds, 62 assists and 29 steals on the year.
Cade Nelson – Southeast Warren
It was a difficult year in the win-loss column for Southeast Warren, but the Warhawks return four of their five regular starters including Class of 2022’s Cade Nelson.
Nelson scored 221 points with 43 assists, 34 rebounds and 30 steals last year. He shot over 31 percent from the field and made a team-leading 44 three-pointers.
Owen Lucas – Bedford
Bedford’s Owen Lucas accounted for 141 points with 73 rebounds, 42 assists and 18 steals last year.
Lucas shined on the offensive glass where 46 of his boards came from That helped him shoot almost 45 percent from the field with 19 made three-pointers.
