Bringing your best game, over the course of a weekend for most of these young men, is something all athletes strive for and these five young men did that the best. Most of the young athletes there showcased a level of talent, as shown by the amount of Saturday and Sunday standouts but particular eyes were glued on these ballers. This list is not in any order, nor is position based, it is only a list of the five players that raised their games enough to either be put on a school’s radar or raise the level of the school looking for them.
5. Scotty Lomax- Hoopsters 17U; Tillman (Groveport Madison): He may have been the most athletic player over the weekend, dazzling the audience with a number of high speed drives and high flying dunks in traffic and on fast breaks. While moving so fast he was always in control of himself, never seeming to be off balance and never being knocked off of the route he wanted to take. Lomax also showcased the ability to score in the mid range efficiently as well, raising up and knocking down multiple jumpers in the flow of the offense. On defense, Lomax moves his feet very well and showed the ability to defend both guard spots, he also used that athletic ability to block shots at the rim. Lomax was visited by a particular school with Groveport ties that was in attendance that was gauging his interest in the school.
4. Jaiden Guice- Hoopsters 17U; Guice (Westerville South): This lefty point guard showed up and was the best point guard there all weekend, exhibiting all the traits of a leader and general on the court. Scouts there were impressed with how he ran his team and his increased range, noting that he also has gotten stronger during the offseason. Guice made good decisions with the ball all night and rarely committed a turnover, showing colleges that he can run the show at the next level. For a pure point guard he moves without the ball very well, getting free, shaking defenders and running off screens well for a player who does not do it much of the time. A three level scorer who displayed a propensity to get stops on defense as well, not as tall as modern point guards but he plays like he is 6-foot-6 with his heart and fearlessness.
3. Amani Lyles Amani Lyles 6'7" | C Beechcroft | 2022 State OH – Ohio Varsity (Beechcroft): The best big man in the Columbus City League put his defense on front street and in just one day and two games wowed scouts with his agility and rim protection. He looks like he lost some of the baby fat he had last season and looks like a physical specimen, Lyles has the look of a dominant presence. No player was ever comfortable while he was in the paint, redirecting driver after driver and forcing teams to settle for contested mid range jump shots while he was in the game. His stock rose because of the effort he put forward on defense, which was his biggest issue leaving his sophomore season. Lyles did not dig into his offense bag too deep but he did not need to in order to raise his stock up in the eyes of colleges.
2. Royal Sibley Royal Sibley 6'6" | PF Whitehall | 2021 State OH – Ohio Varsity Shooting Stars (Whitehall): Needing to prove that he could increase his range and bang bodies with wider players in the paint, Sibley continuously took it to a certain South High School graduate player on Sunday and nailed multiple jumpers from the perimeter. He used his slender frame to slice between defenders and used his long arms to finish at the rim in ways scouts say he had not in the past. On Saturday, he had two pretty impressive games without seeming to fill up the stat sheets, starting transition offense with his steals and shot blocking. This young man made scouts look at him differently because he added more game to match the athleticism he already possess.
1. Zach Dewese- Ohio Ballistics (Old Fort): Dewese showed scouts that he was athletically capable of competing with some of the best athletes in Ohio. Some eye catching rebounds helped his cause because he soar through the air leaving some of his opponents looking flabbergasted and being strong enough to finish through contact. Showing how deep he can shoot with a number of from I-270 three point jump shots, Dewese was a constant threat from outside. Some folks in the gym were raving about his passing abilities, tossing beautiful bounce passes in transition. He helped guide a team that went undefeated over the weekend proving that if nothing else he is a winner and he can win inside an amazing system.
