Continue ReadingThe commitments and offers keep pouring in despite there being no live evaluation periods. Coaches are resorting to zoom calls as they try and close the deal on 2021 prospects as others are watching a ton of film to prepare for their later classes. Let’s take a look at the action from the past week.
COMMITMENTS
2021 Bishop Walsh point guard Jalen Miller Jalen Miller 6'2" | PG Bishop Walsh | 2021 State #151 Nation MD committed to Rutgers. The 6-foot-3 floor general was one of the top stock risers on the east coast and decided to end his recruitment with plans of playing in the Big 10 for 2021-22. Miller not only has improved his scoring ability, but also comes with intangibles that every coach loves in their point guard such as leadership, work ethic and competitiveness. Head coach Steve Pikiell has done a tremendous job building a strong culture in his ongoing 4-year stint at Rutgers. The addition of Miller will continue that trend.
2021 IMG Academy guard Brandon Murray Brandon Murray 6'5" | SG IMG Academy | 2021 #220 Nation FL announced his commitment to head coach Will Wade and the LSU Tigers. The 6-foot-5 guard broke the news here on Prep Hoops explaining why LSU was the best fit for him. Murray, a three-level scorer, will also bring immense toughness and versatility to the Tigers’ backcourt. He’ll have a chance to step in and have an impact immediately as a freshman.
2021 Riverdale Baptist guard Devon Savage Devon Savage 6'4" | SF Riverdale Baptist | 2021 State MD gave his pledge to James Madison. Savage is a huge win for the Dukes as he’ll bring a dynamic, three-level scoring threat with good size for a combo guard at 6-foot-4. With new additions to their coaching staff, James Madison has been quite the presence in the DMV area and I don’t expect that to slow anytime soon. In fact, look for them to capitalize on more prospects in the coming years.
OFFERS
2021 St. Maria Goretti/Global Squad guard Vincent Payne Vincent Payne 6'2" | CG St. Maria Goretti | 2021 State MD received his first offer from Millersville (DII) after his performance at their elite camp. Payne is a 6-foot-2 guard who stretches the floor with his long-range shooting. He moves extremely well without the ball and is starting to show signs of becoming a versatile defender.
No player has improved as dramatically since the end of the high school season than 2023 St. Frances/Team Durant guard Jahn Lamothe. As a result, he’s garnering much attention as shown by DePaul and Georgetown extending offers. The 6-foot-3 combo guard is a three-level scorer and an underrated playmaker. He has the tools to eventually become a prized recruit from the Baltimore area if he can stay on this incline.
2023 Bishop Walsh forward Malik Bowman Malik Bowman 6'7" | PF Bishop Walsh | 2023 MD received an offer from Virginia Tech. The 6-foot-8 southpaw is an intriguing prospect as he continues to become more versatile around the perimeter. He has a solid IQ as a decision maker and ability to score in bunches when operating on the block. He also holds offers from Bryant, Georgetown and Witchita State.
2023 Poly wing Kwame Evans Kwame Evans 6'9" | SF Montverde | 2023 State #20 Nation FL received an offer from Howard. The HBCU trend is alive and well as more and more programs are extending offers to prospects who are considered top in their respective classes. The Bison already won a few players via high school and transfers headlined by Makur Maker. This is the same approach they’re taking with the 6-foot-9 Evans, but doing so at a much earlier time.
2023 St. John’s (D.C) forward Amani Hansberry Amani Hansberry 6'7" | C Mount St. Joseph | 2023 State #52 Nation MD received an offer from Howard as well. Hansberry is a 6-foot-7 old school forward who overwhelms his match up in back to the basket situations. He’s improved his versatility and caught the attention of several high major programs. Like Evans, Howard is doing their due diligence early to establish a relationship with Hansberry in case the HBCU trend really explodes by the time he’s a senior.
