After our series of articles on the Class of 2021 who should be valued, we now shift our attention to those in the Class of 2022 and those that need to be on the radar of college coaches.
We will continue to go through each conference to try and hit as many players as possible with the hopes of helping these juniors the attention of prospective college coaches.
Karter Petzenhauser Karter Petzenhauser 6'4" | SG Spencer | 2022 State IA – Spencer
After Western Christian, four teams went 5-5 in the Lakes Conference last year. One of those was Spencer, who will look to break free from the crowded pack.
For the Tigers to do that, Class of 2022 prospect Karter Petzenhauser Karter Petzenhauser 6'4" | SG Spencer | 2022 State IA will need another big season.
Petzenhauser led Spencer in scoring last year, averaging over 19 a game on 46 percent shooting. He also dished out a team-leading 49 assists, adding 96 rebounds and 36 steals.
Vance Katzfey Vance Katzfey 6'3" | SG Spirit Lake | 2022 State IA – Spirit Lake
A .500 conference mark and winning overall season were positives for Spirit Lake in 2019-20.
Leading scorer Vance Katzfey Vance Katzfey 6'3" | SG Spirit Lake | 2022 State IA returns this year after putting up over 16 points a night as a sophomore. Katzfey shot nearly 56 percent from the field, 45 percent from the three-point line and almost 73 percent at the free throw stripe.
Along with his 340 total points, Katzfey also had 108 rebounds, 45 assists, 26 steals and 18 made triples for the Indians.
Ty Van Essen Ty Van Essen 6'4" | PF Western Christian | 2022 State IA – Western Christian
The reigning conference champions Western Christian reached the Class 2A substate quarterfinals before a tough loss to Okoboji on its home floor.
But like Spencer and Spirit Lake, the Wolfpack also have their leading scorer back in Class of 2022 prospect Ty Van Essen Ty Van Essen 6'4" | PF Western Christian | 2022 State IA .
Van Essen is coming off a sophomore season in which he tallied 14 points and six rebounds a night. Shooting 63 percent from the floor, he racked up 294 points, making 15 three-pointers.
Along with his 131 rebounds, Van Essen also had 34 steals and 30 assists.
Adrian Vaughn – Estherville-LC
Estherville-LC failed to win a conference game last year, but returning starter Adrian Vaughn will try to get the Midgets into better standing.
Vaughn posted 222 points with 62 rebounds, 27 steals and 24 assists. He made over 37 percent of his field goal attempts and knocked down 20 three-pointers in all.
Vaughn was also strong at the free throw line, shooting nearly 82 percent there.
Austin Gaffney – Storm Lake
Checking in at 6-foot-6, Austin Gaffney is a formidable foe in the paint for Storm Lake to build its defense around.
Gaffney produced 122 points with 75 rebounds, 26 blocks and 16 assists last year. He shot nearly 57 percent from the floor and 70 percent at the free throw stripe.
The Tornadoes will have Gaffney and three other players who saw starting time a season ago back after going 7-14.
