Here are some of the top 16U forwards from the summer:
Sam Zilmer Sam Zilmer 6'4" | PF Rockford | 2022 State MN , MN Heat Grow
Zilmer looks ready to take on a significant role as an upperclassman with Rockford, as he was terrific on the summer circuit for Heat Grow. He’s 6-foot-3 or so with solid handles, the ability to beat defenders off the dribble and make plays in traffic while also threatening defenses from the 3-point line. He scored in a lot of ways consistently during the summer and showed he can contribute on the defensive end of the floor, using his length to swallow up smaller ballhandlers.
Justin Wohlers Justin Wohlers 6'6" | PF Lake City | 2022 State MN , MN Lightning Ellerbusch
Wohlers has been a role player for Lake City each of the last two years and excelled. He looks like he’s ready to take a monumental leap as an upperclassman judging by how he played this summer. He’s gotten bigger and stronger, and it shows as he is routinely putting the ball on the floor and beating people off the dribble. He gets to the rim and can finish through contact. He’s still a terrific long-range shooter, but his off-the-dribble game went to another level this summer and he’s showing he can score at will.
Devin Yeager, D1 MN Prospects – Chase
Yeager is a big, rangy, athletic forward who looks like a guy who could be one of the best players in the Central Lakes next year at St. Cloud Tech. He’s 6-foot-5 and has a smoothness that makes everything he does look effortless. He’s an excellent finisher in traffic because of his ability to play through contact and elevate off one or two feet. He’s got solid skills when it comes to passing and handling the ball. And he’s a versatile defender who can guard at least three positions.
Lewis Cargeor Lewis Cargeor 6'6" | PF Osseo | 2022 State MN , Gain Elite Minnesota
Cargeor was impressive throughout the summer in large part due to his motor and effort on both ends of the floor. His defensive toughness and ability to rebound were key factors for his team having the success it did. On the offensive end of the floor, his screening ability, cutting off the ball and offensive rebounding effort allowed him to make an impact on his team without producing a lot of shot attempts and points. I’m excited to see what kind of an impact he makes next winter.
Carson Woodford Carson Woodford 6'7" | C Redwood Valley | 2022 State MN , SW MN Stars
Woodford looks like the next stud coming through Redwood Valley. He averaged 14 points per game as a sophomore and it isn’t difficult to imagine him putting up 20-22 as a junior with how he played with SW MN Stars. He’s a big, aggressive post player who rim-runs with authority, catches everything and finishes at the rim at a high level. He’s developing skills in the mid and high posts and has a soft shooting touch. And on the defensive end of the floor, he’s capable of anchoring a defense because he is athletic enough to defend on the perimeter while also possessing the size and strength to protect the paint.
Thomas Diew Thomas Diew 6'7" | C St. Cloud Apollo | 2022 State MN , MN Comets Elite
Diew was one of the top big guys in the Central Lakes last year and if how he played this summer with Comets is any indication, he’s going to be a monster as an upperclassman. He’s bigger and stronger than most post players, but what sets him apart from even the guys who can match up with him physically is his skill. He’s got excellent footwork, patience on the block and an array of finishing moves to go along with a soft touch. And he’s an excellent passer. He’s a strong rebounder on both ends of the floor too – expect double-double production out of him next winter.
