As we prepare for another season, the staff will be hitting you with several preseason nuggets. This series aims to highlight 30 of the best young cores from within and around the DMV. A “young core” consists of players with at least two full years of high school basketball remaining. This includes prospects from the class of 2022 and younger. Here is a brief rundown of #25-21.
#25 | Archbishop Carroll (DC)
Wilson: Carroll has been known to have a fiery bunch the past few years and I expect that to continue this upcoming season. Brown will be one of the main focal points for this Carroll team as he already has gained good experience while playing as an underclassman. Vavers, who is originally from Lithuania, is regarded as one of the top shooters in DC and can catch fire from deep. This young core has the chance to frustrate any team they face on a given night.
#24 | Georgetown Day (DC)
Ayalew: Dylan Bronner Dylan Bronner 6'4" | SF Georgetown Day | 2022 State MD and Brock Davis Brock Davis 6'5" | SF Georgetown Day | 2022 State MD are a pair of 2022 prospects that make up the foundation of the Hoppers program. Bronner, who is listed at 6-foot-4, is a perimeter player who provides floor spacing but can also mix it up in the paint as a slasher and diligent defender. Davis, who is about 6-foot-5, is known for his relentless motor. He rebounds on both ends and is adept at scoring in the paint where he embraces contact. These two combine to form a dynamic duo that will be a fun watch in the upcoming years.
#23 | Mt. Carmel (MD)
Giacubeno: Ensuring that your team has good guard play is critical. For Mount Carmel, the future is bright behind the 2022 duo of Deon Perry Deon Perry 5'8" | PG Mt. Carmel | 2022 State MD and Tobi Nnadozie Tobi Nnadozie 6'4" | SF Mt. Carmel | 2021 MD . Perry is a 5-foot-9 point guard who is extremely quick with the basketball. He’s at his best operating in high ball screen action and is a major threat as a shooter as well as a distributor to the screener or weakside shooters. He pushes the ball in transition and provides spacing on the floor at all times. Nnadozie is a great complement to Perry as he takes on more of the slashing role. The 6-foot-3 guard has explosive athleticism, making him a lob threat in both the open floor or in half-court sets. Nnadozie is a versatile defender from the 1-3 positions and is very active off the ball always looking for deflections.
#22 | Maret (DC)
Ayalew: Maret has an exciting core of young prospects coming up within their program at the moment. 2022 guard Ridge Parks Ridge Parks 5'9" | PG Maret | 2022 MD is primed for a breakout season and should now have ample opportunity to show what he can do moving forward. The Frogs also have intriguing talent in their 2023 class as well. The headliner of this group is Bryson Wilson Bryson Wilson 6'5" | SF St Stephen’s And St Agnes | 2023 State VA , an athletic, hard-playing 6-foot-5 wing who showed plenty of signs as a freshman. Skilled lead guard James Lerner James Lerner 5'11" | PG Maret | 2023 State MD and newcomer Manny Tucker Manny Tucker 6'7" | C Annandale | 2022 VA , a bruising big man who is at least 6-foot-6, are a couple of other rising sophomores who should not be slept on either.
#21 | Flint Hill (VA)
Ayalew: Coach Reed will have a plethora of young talent at his disposal when the season gets underway. Saxby Sunderland Saxby Sunderland 6'2" | CG Flint Hill | 2022 State VA is the guy in 2022. He’s an experienced lead guard who has all the tools to be a high-level prospect. 2022 sharpshooter Nate Pabis Nate Pabis 6'5" | SF Flint Hill | 2023 State VA , who is about 6-foot-3 or 6-foot-4 now, looks set for a breakout campaign as well. Some other names worth monitoring in the Flint Hill program include Matthew Gray, Jack Thomas, Reis Jones Reis Jones 6'6" | C Oxon Hill | 2021 MD , and Khaleel Abdullah Khaleel Abdullah 6'1" | PG Flint Hill | 2023 State VA .
