Buchanan displays toughness
2022 Darren Buchannan Jr. was a constant slashing threat on offense and cashed in on his drives while embracing contact. At 6-foot-5 he has a strong build and approaches the game with a hardhat mentality. That was on display the second he saw a driving lane develop. Defensively he was a disrupting presence in the passing lane where he jumped passes and created some easy finishes for himself or his teammates on the break.
Clary paces Boo Williams
2022 guard Kanye Clary Kanye Clary 5'11" | PG Massanutten | 2022 State VA ran the show for this Boo Williams squad. The 5-foot-10 southpaw makes up for what he lacks in size with his quick-twitch ability off the bounce. He routinely worked his way into the paint to create plays for others and kept his defender on their toes after converting on a couple of deep three’s. Clary also did a nice job of pushing the tempo and delivering crisp passes to teammates in stride on the break for lay ups.
Lancaster makes his impact felt off the bench
2022 guard combo guard Shane Lancaster Shane Lancaster 6'4" | CG St. John's | 2022 State MD came off the bench and provided valuable energy for Durant. At 6-foot-4 he poses effective size for his position and used it to his advantage on his drives to the rim. He spent time playing both on and off the ball offensively while guarding both guard spots on the defensive end. His athleticism, slight of foot and versatility all contribute to Lancaster being an intriguing prospect to watch develop going forward.
Campbell shows potential
2022 guard DeJuan Campbell DeJuan Campbell 6'1" | PG Kecoughtan | 2022 State VA was the other guard making things happen for Boo Williams. He’s able to cover a lot of ground on his crossovers considering he’s 6-foot-1. Campbell was scoring the ball with craft once he got into the paint and showed decent touch on his floaters. Defensively, he stayed solid and kept his man in front of him. He guarded the primary ball-handler for much of his time on the floor and showed initiative in sprinting back to his man when maneuvering around ball-screens.
Thomas operates
2022 point guard Trey Thomas Trey Thomas 6'3" | PG Wise | 2022 MD handled the ball for the majority of the game for Durant. He was at his best utilizing high ball screens where he either got down hill and attacked the big or snaked the screen, kept his man in jail behind him and made sound reads as the defense reacted. Usually Thomas can fill it up in the scoring column and while he had a few nice finishes at the rim, his shot wasn’t falling but he kept himself effective in other areas.
Melvin’s versatility
Greg Melvin Greg Melvin 6'7" | PF Cape Henry | 2022 State VA is a 6-foot-4 wing/forward that plays bigger than his listed height. For Boo Williams, Melvin did a list of things such as use his size and strength in the paint against opposing bigs, approach rebounding with aggression and stretched the floor offensively by converting on catch-and-shoot corner three’s. He collected three of his five total offers since June and his mix of size and versatility show why college programs should continue to track him closely.
Solomon produces in the post
I liked what I saw from 2022 forward David Solomon III David Solomon III 6'6" | C VA Academy | 2023 State VA . The 6-foot-7 big showed really good vision from the post area after he’d catch on the left block and take one or two dribbles toward the paint with his back to the basket. The defense would collapse and he’d quickly locate open shooters around the arc, delivering crisp passes in their shooting pockets. Solomon also had a few tough buckets over his left shoulder and was a consistent presence on the glass for Durant.
