Here’s a quick look at where the three ranked players who have received offers in the Class of 2023 currently stand with their early recruitment.
Marquis Cook Marquis Cook 6'6" | SF AZ Compass Prep | 2023 State #6 Nation AZ (2023 Jefferson)
Cook made his debut nationally as one of the top players in the country (he’s ranked #27 in the PrepHoops Class of 2023 list) so there’s no question he’s already on the radar of many college programs. The athletic 6-foot-7 all-around wing known as “Mookie” picked up many scholarship offers during his freshman campaign at Jefferson, one in which he averaged 13.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. Oregon and Washington offered during the year to go along with ones he received before his high school career even started from Washington State, Pacific, and San Francisco. Bryant offered in May and recently HBCUs have jumped into the mix as Delaware State, Southern, and Jackson State have offered. It’s obviously wide open for Cook who has even answered questions about the possibility of going pro directly out of high school.
Jackson Shelstad Jackson Shelstad 6'0" | PG West Linn | 2023 State #55 Nation OR (2023 West Linn)
In any other year it would be Shelstad getting all of the attention as the 5-foot-11 point guard had himself quite a ballyhood freshman season. Starting at the point guard slot he gathered the inevitable comparisons to former West Linn legend Payton Pritchard and Shelstad finished the season averaging 14.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and a 6A state-leading 4.0 steals. Like Cook, he entered his high school career with a few offers in hand as Big Sky members Eastern Washington, Portland State, Montana, and Montana State had all jumped in and then Cal Poly offered right after the season, as did Bryant. Washington State became his first Pac-12 offer in July and like many other top players around the country, Shelstad received an HBCU offer from Grambling. Shelstad’s recruitment is wide open but you can’t help but think an Oregon offer would be well received.
Esyah Pippa White (2023 Gresham)
The third rising sophomore to receive an offer so far is Pippa White, who stepped right into the starting lineup as a freshman at Gresham and averaged 10.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 5.8 assists. The 5-foot-11 guard is still developing physically but has shown great acumen and ability with his basketball skills. Pippa-White’s offer has come from HBCU member Jackson State and it could very well be the first of others to come as he continues his maturation as a point guard prospect.
