Continue ReadingPreviously, I broke down the top candidates in the 2021 class, as well as breakout prospects to watch who are just outside of my top 10. Below I’ll break down 10 more candidates from the Grand Rapids area who are ready to rise the ranks and emerge as breakout players.
Chris Battiste | 6’4″ F | Forest Hills Central
Chris is a lanky wing who uses his frame to alter shots in the paint. Chris is effective in full-court situations on the defensive end due to his quick hands and his ability to force turnovers. He’s a good rebounder on both ends of the court and typically grabs the ball at the high point. Chris is also a plus shooter who can knock down shots from the perimeter.
Xavier Chavis | 6’3″ F | Holland
Xavier is a high-energy wing who flies around the court. Defensively, Xavier is great in zone situations due to his ability to read and react. Xavier is a good passer out of the post who can set up his teammates with quality looks. Offensively, Xavier runs the floor well and is a threat to score in transition.
Andrew Larson Andrew Larson 6'4" | SG Caledonia | 2021 State MI | 6’5″ F | Caledonia
Andrew is a good shooter who can knock down looks from the mid-range extended to the perimeter. He has a nice shot release and doesn’t hesitate to pull the trigger. Andrew is an aggressive defender who can alter shots at a high rate. He’s quick enough to guard small guards and he uses his length to alter passing lanes.
EJ Victory | 5’9″ G | Grand Rapids Angels
EJ is a great facilitator in transition and in high ball-screen situations in the half-court. EJ is a good shooter who thrives in pull-up situations. He doesn’t offer much resistance, if any, against bigger, more physical guards. EJ is quick defensively and moves extremely well laterally.
Jared Lary | 6’6″ F | Grand Rapids Christian
Jared is a lanky wing who can get a bucket in a number of unconventional ways. Jared is a good shooter and has a smooth stroke from the perimeter. He plays with a good pace of play and can blow past defenders in transition. Jared is also a great passer in transition and has a knack for sucking the defense in, allowing his teammates to set up for open looks.
Donovan Boyd | 6’4″ SF | Grand Rapids Christian
Donovan is a versatile swingman who uses his length and athleticism to score and defend effectively. Offensively, Donovan can put the ball on the floor and score in dribble drive scenarios. He’s a plus shooter from spot-up situations. In my opinion, Jared’s biggest asset is his ability to create second-chance opportunities. He’s always active on the glass and converts off-balanced looks.
Freddy Hull Freddy Hull 5'7" | SG Grant | 2021 State MI | 5’7″ G | Muskegon
Freddy is a knockdown shooter from the perimeter and has one of the smoothest jumpers I’ve scouted in the 2021 class. He’s great in spot-up situations and warrants a close cover in all half-court sets. Freddy is an effective passer in ball-screen sets and does a great job of setting up his teammates to score close to the rim. Defensively, he’s quick enough to guard baseline-to-baseline without help.
Kaleb Mitchelson Kaleb Mitchelson 6'2" | CG Muskegon Reeths-Puffer | 2021 State MI | 6’0″ G | Reeths Puffer
Kaleb is one of the more poised guards in the area and operates with a level of steadiness that isn’t seen every day. His ability to slow the game down stands out, and he uses this effectively in is shot selection. He’s an effective passer both in half-court sets and in transition and sets his teammates up to score consistently.
Trevor Smith Trevor Smith 6'1" | PG Stoney Creek | 2021 State MI | 6’4″ F | Hopkins
Trevor is a big-bodied forward who uses his size to create scoring opportunities for himself and others. His ability to see the floor and make timely passes to his teammates in the half-court stand-out and is a key factor in Hopkin’s success. Trevor runs the floor well in transition opportunities and is a good finisher at the rim.
Kendall Smith Kendall Smith 6'8" | SF Muskegon Reeths-Puffer | 2021 State MI | 6’7″ F | Reeths Puffer
Kendall is a lanky forward that can score consistently from the perimeter and inside the arch. Kendall does a great job of creating second-chance opportunities on the offensive end by attacking the glass and getting a body on a man. Defensively, Kendall is a good rim protector who can defend effectively without fouling.
