This series will review my initial 15 players to watch as potential MVP candidates in the 757 this season. While this list will obviously be subject to change as the season begins and progresses, right now in my opinion these players have the best cases as MVP candidates. When considering this list, my criteria included considering their resumes and their current projected team situation.
7. Allen Strothers Allen Strothers 6'2" | PG Menchville | 2021 State VA | 6’2 PG 2021 | Menchville
Why: Allen Strothers Allen Strothers 6'2" | PG Menchville | 2021 State VA is a prototype lead guard for the next level. At 6’2, Strothers is lanky and athletic, allowing him to harrass his opponents. Menchville lost a couple major pieces which will allow for Strothers to step up and assert himself more. I expect career high numbers from this rising senior as he looks to keep Menchville in contention. With his abilities, expect a statline around 15+ points, 5 assists and 2+ steals a game easily.
8. Greg Melvin Greg Melvin 6'7" | PF Cape Henry | 2022 State VA Jr | 6’7 F 2022 | Cape Henry
Why: His presence in the paint. Last year, Melvin Jr had a field day against most teams in the paint. At 6’7, Melvin Jr is strong and has a quick first leap, allowing him to dominate on the boards. With a summer to grow and progress, the already formidable forward could take another step as a player. Double doubles are in the near future for Greg Melvin Greg Melvin 6'7" | PF Cape Henry | 2022 State VA Jr.
9. Efrem ‘Butta’ Johnson Efrem ‘Butta’ Johnson 6'4" | NA lbs | SG Grissom | 2022 State #NA Nation AL | 6’4 CG 2022 | Western Branch
Why: “Butta” is one of the most athletic guards in the 757. At 6’4, Johnson possesses the perfect size for a combo guard. Smooth and quick, Johnson can either rise up from three or get in the lane for the finish. As a rising junior, I expect Johnson to fully assert himself as a dominant guard. Johnson has the potential to hit the 20 point mark for averages this season as not many opponents can contain a player like him.
